Texas Rangers (60-49) vs Oakland A’s (63-45)
Friday August 2
o.co Coliseum – Oakland, CA
TEX: Alexi Ogando (R)
OAK: Tommy Milone (L)
Moneyline: Oakland -145. Texas +135
This is a huge series between the top two teams in the American League West and the Texas Rangers have all the momentum. Texas has won 4 in a row having swept the Angels and hosted Arizona for one game at home before making the hop to Oakland. Despite being behind the A’s in the standings Texas has played them well this season. They are 6-4 including taking 2 of 3 in their lone series at Oakland to date. Texas is primed for a run though there is speculation they are one of the teams that could be hit by suspensions for PEDs – OF Nelson Cruz.
When available Alexi Ogando has been a nice starting option for the Rangers. He has a nice ERA of 3.05 which is better than when he was last a full time starter back in 2011. The free passes have been a bit disconcerting as he is not even averaging 2K/BB which is a standard for minimum effectiveness, regardless of role though. Ogando was sharp the last time Texas visited Oakland beating the A’s 6-2 by pitching 6 solid innings and giving up just the couple of runs.
While Texas comes in on a winning note the A’s dropped their last two of their set against Toronto. Oakland has the best record at home of any team in the American League and hasn’t dropped back to back series there all season long. The bats fell silent against Toronto scoring just a couple of runs in the losses which is a recurring theme. Offense is always a concern as they are prone to slumps and big outbursts. Against the Rangers they have been OK with the bat scoring 5 or more runs in half their contests this season.
Lefty Tommy Milone has been mostly effective this season. He hasn’t been quite as sharp as last year but if you get him at home his numbers are so much better. That is primarily because the long ball has been killing him and it is just tougher to knock them out of o.co Coliseum. He was sharp his last time out against the Angels limiting them to just a single run, but it was on a long ball from OF Josh Hamilton. His BAA is down this year over last but his homers have spiked which is the ERA has not followed suit.
O/U Pick: Over
Score Prediction: Oakland 5 – Texas 4
These teams are at it again and this is a big series. Oakland has been scuffling but I think they will write the ship Friday night to open what should be a very good series. The home record stands out and even though Texas has had success at o.co I think Oakland will grind it out…like they almost always seem to do.
