Tampa Rays (38-35) vs New York Yankees (39-33)
Friday June 21
Yankee Stadium – Bronx, NY
TB: Roberto Hernandez (R)
NYY: David Phelps (R)
Moneyline: New York -125, Tampa +115
Tampa jumped all over the Yankees in taking the first game of the series, bringing them to within a game of New York who sits just above the Rays in the American League East standings. Tampa has not been playing great lately partly due to key arms David Price and Alex Cobb being out of commission. They are hoping to get a jolt with the arrival of highly touted prospect OF Wil Myers. The first few games were nothing to speak of as he is batting under .200. He has been no Yasiel Puig early on that’s for sure.
The former Fausto Carmona (Roberto Hernadez) has been a tease this season. Though probably not derserving of the chance of a rotation spot on a playoff calibre team he is making his starts and giving the Rays innings. At his best he has been nearly unhittable (3 hits over 8 innings against Miami) at his worst awful (not even pitching 3 innings against Baltimore). Even the Rays don’t know what they are going to get from game to game which makes it hard for us too. Personally I wouldn’t take the shot even though the Rays generally play the Yankees pretty tight.
It is just fascinating that the Yankees have put up the record they have this season. 1B Mark Teixeira just returned to the disabled list joing Curtis Granderson as key players who started the deason on the disabled list, got healthy (and did nothing) only to get hurt again. SS Derek Jeter and the much maligned 3B Alex Rodriguez haven’t even played this season. Even Jeter’s primary backup, Eduardo Nunez, has missed more than a month yet the Yankees are righ there in the thick of the most competitive division in all of baseball.
After a couple of very good starts, and wins, David Phelps got roughed up a little in his last outing against the Angels. He has an ERA of 2.50 against Tampa over a handful of games including 3 starts (he has never lost to them). The way things are tightening up in the East this is a big series and Phelps is getting a nice taste of what it is like to be a key figure in a big series in the Bronx. Odds are that neither of these pitchers will be the deciding factors in this one.
O/U Pick: Over
Score Prediction: New York 7 – Tampa 4
Friday night in the Bronx can be electric but the pitching matchup leaves something to be desired. The value is all on the New York side maybe even more so after losing the series opener. You could easily pass on this one for some more predictable options as Friday will have a full card after a quieter Thursday. Yankees might also be a interesting series play after losing the opener. There might be some sneay value there.
