On paper this team is a lot better on paper but the results have not been there as we are one fifth of the way through the season. The Padres were confident that adding some legit offensive players were all it would take to move them over the edge but the pitching has sagged, even though they reinforced that too with the addition of James Shields. They lead the league in quality starts but are 21st in ERA. That seems to say that the bullpen is letting the team down.
Shields leads the team in wins and if you watch him it looks like he is adjusting to the National League just fine, striking out batters at an impressive rate. His bugaboo this season has been the home run. With 11 served up already he is on pace to give up more homers than he has at any point of his career, surprising given half of his starts are in spacious PetCo Park.
The Mariners are in a very similar situation to San Diego. They thought they had their pitching right where they wanted it so they focused on offense this offseason, bringing in slugger Nelson Cruz. However, the pitching, other than that of The King, has not lived up to expectations and the bats around Cruz have really struggled. As a result the team has to hope for improvement on both fronts if they want to compete. The good news is that nobody has run away with the division in the interim.
The numbers for Taijuan Walker speak for themselves. He has made six starts this season, averaging less than 5 inning per while sporting an ERA over 8. The numbers are so bad that they almost have to improve but each start could also be his last before getting sent down or sent to the pen. There is some talent there but right now he is more tire fire than prospect and you don’t want to get burned.

No reason not to fade Seattle here. Walker has been terrible and San Diego is probably the more complete team. Awesome value given the pitching matchup.
