One of the best teams in the East, the Pittsburgh Penguins, will take on one of the worst in the New York Islanders in Brooklyn. The Penguins have earned 29 points on the year, which is tied for the third best mark in the East behind the Rangers and the Canadiens.
On the other hand, the Islanders have had a terrible start to the season after earning a playoff berth this past spring and making it to the Conference Semi-Finals. The team ranks amongst the bottom in most major statistical categories, including 25th overall in PP%.
Captain Sidney Crosby has been on a tear this season. Since returning from an early concussion that sidelined him for the first six games, Crosby has scored 15 goals in 16 games played. It appears the captain is on a mission to prove he’s still the best player in the word and not his protégé, Connor McDavid, as of yet at least.
Evgeni Malkin and Phil Kessel share the team-lead in points with 21 a piece, one ahead of the aforementioned Crosby. The Pens should have a deep scoring unit with the likes of Patric Hornquist, Conor Sheary, Chris Kunitz, Nick Bonino, and Carl Hagelin behind the top three, but the latter three haven’t produced as much as expected as of yet.
The back-end for the Pens is once again led by Kris Letang, the offensive dynamo who leads the squad in defensive production with 12 points in 17 games. He’s averaging the most TOI on the team, playing nearly have a half at 26:06, which is concerning in terms of longevity over the season and playoffs for the oft injured rear-guard.
Since returning from an injury at the start of the year, Matt Murray has taken over the starting role from Marc-Andre Fleury. On the season, Murray owns a 1.75 GAA and a .939 SV%, both excellent marks. He’s vastly outperformed Fleury’s 3.38 and .901 stats and it appears that “Flower” may be on his way out of town by next year.
The Islanders sit amongst the worst in a number of different categories, which can be an overall insight as to how their season is going so far. New York ranks 22nd in goals for at an average of 2.4 per game, 24th in goals against at 3.0, 25th in powerplay at 12.9% and 21st in penalty kill at 80.0%.
John Tavares leads the team in scoring with 17 points in 21 games, which is low for his standards and it appears he is still missing former linemate, Kyle Okposo. The Isles only have three forwards who have tallied double-digit point totals on the year. Compare that to the other team from NY, the Rangers, who have 14 players with double digit points and you can see why the Blueshirts sit in first and the Isles in last in the Metro Division.
Nick Leddy leads the Isles blueliners with 10 points and Dennis Seidenberg has been a nice signing for the team, who has four goals, eight points and a plus-10 rating in 15 games played this season.
The goaltending situation is also a mess in Brooklyn, seeing as they have three goalies on the active roster but JP Berube won’t be sent down (exposed to waivers) or get into any game action. Thomas Greiss leads the team with a 2.41 GAA and a .920 SV%, and Jaroslav Halak was previously seeking a trade but owns a 3.08 GAA and .904 SV% on a significant contract, so it may be difficult to facilitate.

Free Pittsburgh Penguins vs New York Islanders NHL Hockey Prediction
Pittsburgh is the vastly better team even despite New York’s winning record on home ice. I like the offensive prowess of Crosby and his squad to prevail in a close proximity road game in Brooklyn.
4* Free NHL Betting Pick: Pittsburgh Moneyline
The Penguins are scoring at a much better rate than the Isles’, with New York allowing three goals per game on average. Pittsburgh allows a similar amount, but since the beginning of November they’ve only allowed three or more goals on two occasions.
