Two teams currently on the outside looking in at the Eastern Conference playoff picture meet in DC Tuesday night when the 10th seed Washington Capitals host the 11 seed Ottawa Senators. Both teams have some ground to make up – the Caps come home after an 0-3 road trip while the Sens are coming off losses in their last two home starts.

Ottawa Senators +1½ -245 +117 Ov 5½ -126
Washington Capitals -1½ +205 -129 Un 5½ +114
It’s hard to believe but goaltending is the Senators glaring weakness. The team allows a staggering 3.06 goals per game – far off from where they were last year at this time. Craig Anderson has been a disappointment indeed – 15-10-6 on the season with a 3.19 GAA and .902 save percentage. He is 0-1-1 with a 4.50 GAA and .833 save percentage in his last two games – not good.
The Senators have been decent offensively this year – 2.80 goals per game. Erik Karlsson has five points in his last three games, Clark MacArthur has been a nice surprise and has eight points in eight games and Jared Cowan has three points in three games. Some help from Bobby Ryan would be nice – he has one point in his last four games!
The Washington Capitals look to be in some trouble – losers of 11 of their last 14 games – three straight ahead of this contest. They come in to Tuesday’s contest having lost three straight games and with only one player showing up every night – captain Alex Ovechkin has three goals in his past four games. Troy Brouwer has one point in eight games, Joel Ward is pointless in four games and Eric Fehr hasn’t hit the score sheet in six games.
It’s Ovy and nobody else in Washington right now.
Defensively the Caps have also had their problems – Braden Holtby is 13-11-2 this years with a 3.04 goals against average and a .911 save percentage. Philip Grubauer has started the last two games and has been brutal – get this, he’s 0-2-0 with a 9.00 GAA and .727 save percentage in those starts – ugly. The Caps need some goaltending if they want to stay in the playoff race.
Betting Prediction: A few trends to consider:
• Under is 15-7-2 in OTT last 24 Tue. games.
• Over is 8-2 in WAS last 10 Tue. games.
• Under is 30-13-10 in WAS last 53 vs. Atlantic.
• OTT are 3-11 in the last 14 meetings in Washington.
• Home team is 22-7 in the last 29 meetings.
The Senators won the previous two meetings between the two, 6-4 on Nov. 27 and 3-1 on Dec. 30. The Capitals went 0-2-1 in 2012-13 against Ottawa and haven’t beaten the Senators since Dec. 7, 2011. I can’t see that changing Tuesday night – the Senators were 6-1-1 before their latest two game slide – they looked like a playoff team. Nothing lately has shown me that Washington is a playoff team.
Pick: Ottawa Senators +117
