Oakland A’s (43-32) vs. Seattle Mariners (32-42)
Friday June 21
Safeco Field – Seattle, WA
OAK: Bartolo Colon (R)
SEA: Hisashi Iwakuma (R)
Moneyline: Oakland -105, Seattle +105
Oakland must be thrilled to be leaving Texas even though they are not leaving for home but to continue their road tour of the American League West. Oakland is still atop the division but their lead has been shrunk to just a single game heading into Friday. They will look to get back on track against a Seattle team that has won 6 of their 10 meeting the A’s this season. Oakland isn’t a great hitting team, just 19th in the Majors with a batting average of .248 but theyare 7th in runs thanks to their ability to knock the ball out of the park and string together big innings.
The jokes about Bartolo Colon finding the fountain of youth may be getting old but I can’t think of any other way to explain it. He leads Oakland in wins and ERA which is especially impressive given the quality young arms on the staff. Oakland has won Colon’s last six starts including his last outing which was a victory over Seattle. He doesn’t blow hitters away the way he did when he was with the Indians but he has been super effective.
The Seattle Mariners might be reeling a little in this opener after dropping the closing game of their series against the Angels after staking themselves to a 7-0 lead. The scoring outburst was out of the ordinary and so was the fact that Felix Hernandez was so ineffective. He gave up 6 ER over 5 innings and his ERA jumped a half a run. The effort wasted a jack by 3B Kyle Seager who has settled in the middle of that lineup. He is proving to be better than expected but also exemplifies how weak their offense really is.
Hisashi Iwakuma is enjoying a fantastic second season in the Majors. Even after getting roughed up in his last outing he has the second best ERA in the American League, even better than more heralded teammate King Felix Hernandez. Unfortunately that poor performance was against Oakland – tying his shortest outing of the season as well as most hits allowed this season. Because he pitches in the West Coast, and for a not very good team, no one is talking much about Iwakuma, but he is definitely in the Cy Young race at this point in the season.
O/U Pick: Over
Score Prediction: Oakland 5 – Seattle 3
The numbers may tell one story but my gut is telling me another when it comes to the pitching in in this one. I see how the oddsmakers came up with that super low total but for me that is just begging to go over. If you prefer taking sides than I would say Oakland the far better team who has always rebounded when down this season.
