Probable Starters: OAK: Tommy Milone (L) KC: Wade Davis (R)
Moneyline: Oakland -120, Kansas City +110
Oakland got another command pitching performance from recalled starter Dan Straily to complete their series victory against the Chicago Cubs. All told they gave up just two hits in the shutout but their offense sputtered again as they scored just a single run. That may be an issue because Kansas City seems to have finally discovered their offense. Oakland enters the series in first place but by just a game over Texas. Despite their very good record Oakland is just a .500 team on the road so this series will be a test.
Starter Tommy Milone has seen his ERA jump over his last three starts. It seems quite simple that it is the long ball that is doing him in. He gave up three homers in his last outing against St. Louis and has given up at least one in 8 straight starts. Ironically the last game he didn’t was a 2-1 victory over Kansas City back in May, where he gave up just 1ER over 6 innings. Milone has been a prime example of how homers and walks will kill you. Yes he has to watch those BBs too.
The Kansas City bats came alive as they beat the Cleveland Indians to close their series and close some ground. The The Royals smacked 3 home runs, an impressive feat given they are second last in the Majors in singers with just 51 heading into the contest. K.C. Just can’t seem to put together their offense with their pitching which has improved – they have the best ERA in the American League. The Royals have a chance to get into the race in the AL Central if they can get everything going heading into the All-Star break.
Starter Wade Davis was the less heralded pitcher the Royals acquired from Tampa this offseason. He started the season strongly but has not been very good since the beginnning of May. His last outing was his most disastrous as he gave up 6ER without even getting through a couple of innings. His problem is simple, he is just too hittable with a BAA of .328. With the Royals generally not providing much offense of their own it has been difficult to get a win – he has just once since the middle of May.
O/U Pick: Under Score Prediction: Oakland 4 – Kansas City 2
I know the A’s have not been very good on the road this season but I am not quite ready to buy in on the Royals. From both of these teams the thing I believe in the most is that Oakland will continue to pitch it well. Milone may not be as sharp as last season but Davis inspires absolutely no confidence. You have to go with either Oakland or pass on this one.
