The Islanders have slipped from a wildcard seed to just out of the last one. They currently have 80 points on the year, trailing the Boston Bruins for the 8th spot in the East by two points, albeit with a game at hand.
The Penguins don’t have to worry about making the postseason, as they have clinched a spot and are now just battling for positioning.
John Tavares is the leader both as captain of the Islanders, and on their score sheet. Tavares has netted 27 goals and 62 points across his 72 games played, helping New York to a 9th place ranking in goals per game at an average of 2.9.
Joining Johnny T on the top line are Andres Lee and Josh Bailey, both of whom are unsurprisingly having career years. Lee is tied for the team lead in goals, with Tavares and Bailey sits second in points with 49.
Nick Leddy is the driving force on the backend, especially on the powerplay where he’s registered 13 points. On the season, Leddy has 11 goals and 40 points overall.
Jaroslav Halak began the year as the Isles’ starting goalie, but has since been demoted to the minors for a long stint, likely a tough pill to swallow considering he is a 10-year veteran and was once a top netminder in the league.
Halak is still somehow just 31 years old and has been recalled to back-up new starter, Thomas Greiss. Greiss owns a .914 SV% and a 2.67 GAA on the year.
Speaking of goaltenders that have been relegated to a lesser role, look no further than Pittsburgh and former Cup-winning starter, Marc-Andre Fleury. “Flower” now backs up the talented young Matt Murray, who took over last playoff run and earned a Cup victory as a starter himself.
Fleury’s numbers this season pale in comparison to those of Murray’s, considering he still owns a good .911 SV% with a 2.94 GAA. Murray has played 43 games and has a .924 SAV% and 2.38 GAA, respectively.
On the blueline, Justin Schultz has filled in admirably for the injured Kris Letang. Schultz has 48 points on the year and ranks in a tie for 5th in the league amongst defenseman points.
The Pens are the top team in the NHL in terms of goal scoring, averaging 3.5 per game. Captain Sidney Crosby leads the NHL in the category, netting 41 in 66 games played.
Crosby’s brilliance may be overshadowing Evgeni Malkin’s excellent season, as Malkin has tallied 72 points in just 62 games played, 33 of which being goals.
NHL Betting Trends:
- New York has a minus-7 goal differential on the year
- New York is 14-16-5 on the road
- New Jersey is 5-4-2 in March
- Sidney Crosby leads the league with 41 goals and 85 points
- Pittsburgh is 8-1-1 in their last 10 games
- Pittsburgh is 29-4-3 at home this year
Free New York Islanders vs Pittsburgh Penguins NHL Hockey Prediction:
The Penguins have four regulation losses at home this season in 36 games, owning the best home record of any team in the league. They also trail Washington by just one point for the Metro Division lead, so the motivation should be there to earn another W.
In addition, the depth of the Isles took a hit with Ryan Strome recently hitting the IR. I like Pens to cover here.
