The Alabama Crimson Tide are shooting for a historic fourth BCS National Championship in five years this season, and what makes it that much more incredible is that they are actually the favorites to do it.
Head coach Nick Saban has done a phenomenal job of restocking the talent pool at Alabama year after year, and three notable NFL prospects will lead the way for the Crimson Tide this season.
2013 BCS Championship Odds: +300
Notable Prospect #1: QB AJ McCarron – Senior
McCarron took some major steps forward in leading Alabama to another national title a year ago, as the coaching staff trusted him more and more as the year progressed to the point where he became a star in the offense. It certainly helps that the Crimson Tide are loaded with playmakers once again, as McCarron enters his senior year with the chance to tremendously upgrade his NFL Draft stock. McCarron has all of the weapons to be a legitimate franchise quarterback somewhere down the line, but he will need to continue to progress the way he did a year ago in order for that to happen. McCarron threw for 2,933 yards and 30 touchdowns compared to just three interceptions a year ago, and if he can somehow improve on those numbers there will be a number of NFL teams calling on him following this season.
Notable Prospect #2: WR Amari Cooper – Sophomore
McCarron will benefit from the presence of Cooper, the standout receiver that broke most of Julio Jones’ freshman records a year ago. Cooper caught 59 passes for 1,000 yards and 11 touchdowns in his first season at Alabama, and it will be interesting to see what he has in store for an encore. Cooper has the size at 6’1’’, 200 pounds, and speed to burn, so it will be interesting to see if he enjoys a breakout sophomore campaign as the Tide look to spread the field more and more this coming season. If he reaches his potential this coming year, there is a good chance he will be a high NFL draft pick come 2014.
Notable Prospect #3: LB CJ Mosley – Senior
Enough cannot be said about how consistently dominant the Crimson Tide defense has been over the years, and Mosley figures to be a major factor in that again this season. Mosley passed on the NFL to return for his senior season knowing full well that he can play a major role in college football history by leading this defense to another national title, and that was just too much to pass up. Alabama has several notable NFL Draft prospects on the defense again including junior safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix and senior defensive end Ed Stinson, but Mosley is the most talented of the group and will have a huge impact on the Tide’s title hopes this coming year.
