Who Will Grab the Eighth And Final Playoff Spot in the NBA Western Conference?
The online sports books have come to realize that one of the more exciting things to watch in this late stretch of the NBA season is the battle for the last playoff spot in the Western Conference. There are three teams battling for the spot and one team battling to retain seventh spot and stay out of the tangle for eighth. With the resurgence of the Los Angeles Lakers, the betting public has something new to track and monitor as the NBA regular season comes to an end.
The team battling to stay in seventh is the Houston Rockets. With a little bit of luck, the Rockets could move past Golden State for the sixth spot in the conference. But the Rockets seem to be see-sawing back and forth between seventh and eighth. With that eighth spot becoming a very crowded place, the Rockets continue to stay above .500 in its quest to make it to the NBA playoffs.
The Los Angeles Lakers hold onto the eighth spot in the Western Conference, but things have been shaky for the Lakers at best. The sports betting world has watched as the Lakers have managed to win six of its last 10 games, but Los Angeles is barely clinging to the .500 record it needs to stay in contention. Considering where the Lakers were just two months ago, the fact that Los Angeles is in the playoff discussion at all is a testament to the team’s resolve. But the fans want playoff success from this expensive and drama-filled lineup. Anything less than a win in the first round of the playoffs could be considered a miserable failure by fans and management.
The betting sites see the Utah Jazz as the team giving Los Angeles the most problems in the playoff hunt. But Utah is also creating its own issues by losing games in bunches. Utah has won only four of its last 10 games, but the team is currently riding a two-game winning streak. That is the kind of inconsistency that has hurt the Jazz lately. If Utah could ever put together a real winning streak, then the Lakers would be in huge trouble.
The team on the outside is the Dallas Mavericks, but the Mavs are closing fast. Dallas has put together a three-game winning streak that has put it to within two games of the final playoff spot in the west. The Lakers will need to respond to that kind of pressure with wins if it wants to hold onto its playoff berth.
The real battle here will be between the Dallas Mavericks and Los Angeles Lakers as the Utah Jazz start to fade away. In the end, the Lakers were able to pull themselves together before Dallas did and that head start will mean the difference between Los Angeles winning the final playoff spot, or Dallas knocking them out.
