Game 1: Utah Jazz @ San Antonio Spurs – Friday, March 22
Whether you want to become a bookie or follow the latest news on betting action from a distance, you’ll want to trust the Spurs in this game. Both of these teams each have their eyes on key playoff spots, with San Antonio fighting for the top spot in the Western Conference while Utah is just trying to bust in and take the eighth seed from the Los Angeles Lakers or Houston. The Jazz are a team that has struggled in recent weeks and dropped games against teams they should have been able to beat, especially at home, where they are normally so tough. San Antonio lost Tony Parker to an ankle issue, and yet, the Spurs keep chugging along, in part due to the depth on the roster and partly because of Gregg Popovich’s mastery on the bench.
The Spurs are one of the most complete teams in the sport, ranking third in defensive efficiency and sixth in offensive efficiency. As the home stretch comes, the Spurs need to win as many games as possible to hold off Oklahoma City for the top seed in the West. Given its success at home all season, it is hard to think they won’t do that here.
NBA Betting Pick: San Antonio
Game 2: Cleveland Cavaliers @ Houston Rockets – Friday, March 22
When immersed in the world of legal online sports betting, you would profit from an awareness of up-and-coming teams, not just established powerhouses. One of the top stories in the NBA has been the surprise surge of the Rockets under coach Kevin McHale, fueled by the emergence of James Harden as more than just a sidekick, to the point that he is now a bonafide star. Kyrie Irving’s injury has shelved him for essentially the rest of the season, leaving behind a hopeless Cleveland team that was already struggling to put talent on the floor. Houston has an offense much in the mold of the Steve Nash Suns teams in that the Rockets’ best defense is a good offense.
Houston consistently plays games into the 100s; a team hoping to stop Houston better have either an elite defense or an offense capable of making shots with them. Cleveland doesn’t possess either of those attributes. The last time these two teams met, Houston won by a 112-104 score in Cleveland with Harden dropping 29 while Irving dropped 30. The two teams will now meet again with Harden on the floor, but no Irving. What do you expect to happen? Houston should roll.
NBA Betting Pick: Houston
Game 3: Minnesota Timberwolves @ Phoenix Suns – Friday, March 22
This is a ping pong ball game: These two teams are among the worst in the Western Conference and would likely benefit from a loss more than a win, given how close the two are in the standings. Ricky Rubio and Goran Dragic will create a battle of two of the better second-tier point guards in basketball, as both teams are trying to create shots for NBA journeymen or talents that haven’t yet reached their potential. In other words, this is a tale of two developing teams that are years from competing for any NBA hardware.
Neither team is particularly great at many aspects of the sport, so this game likely boils down to which team can get better shots and easier looks. In that regard Phoenix does at least possess some jump shooting ability in the person of Jared Dudley, not to mention a post presence in Michael Beasley who will likely be jacked up to play his old team. In either case, don’t trust either team too much, but the Suns are the better play at home.
