Pacific division foes Edmonton and Los Angeles will clash for the second time this season. The Kings trail the Oilers by four points in the standings, but have had Edmonton’s number for more than a year now.
The absence of star netminder Jonathan Quick hasn’t slowed this team too terribly, as they have hung in and are right in the thick of the playoff race at the moment.
This Kings team is always hard to predict at this point in the season, as this is an experienced group that knows the NHL season is a marathon and not a sprint.
LA has a knack for slowly building over the course of the season and hitting their peak by March and April, so some losses along the way in December or January to some questionable teams are never out of the question.
Los Angeles will definitely take some stock in the fact that since the start of last season, they’ve absolutely owned the Oilers, with a record of 6-0 over their last six meetings, including a 4-2 win in LA in November.
This team kind of hobbled their way into the holiday break at 4-3-3 over their final 10 games, but much of that could be due to playing a marathon of a road trip, as they haven’t played a game at the Staples Center since December 10. Thursday’s contest will mark the end of a nine-game road swing.
The sun is finally shining in Edmonton again, as a health Connor McDavid is leading the NHL in points, and the Oilers sit nicely in second place in the Pacific Division.
A long playoff drought seems destined to end this season, so long as they can stay healthy and continue to avoid lengthy losing skids.
As with their opponents on Thursday, the Oilers stumbled to the checkpoint to close out their first three months, going 4-2-4 over their final 10 games before the holiday break.
What can be said is that the Oilers are a different team this year, as they’ve been able to get away from track meets in a lot of cases and have played some tight one-goal games. Edmonton’s last four games have all ended by scorelines of 3-2, with them winning three and dropping one.
That’s something you wouldn’t usually associate with the Oilers, who struggled to win one-goal games due to some defensive deficiencies, but they’ve been finding ways to get wins in games where they don’t blow the doors off their opponent.

Sometimes it’s just as simple as looking at the history between the two. It’s a divisional game where both teams know one another well, and the Kings know they can beat the Oilers almost at their leisure.

This is an “upset” pick you should definitely have on your radar for Thursday. The Kings come in as a +118, and they’ve had their way with the Oilers. I like LA to take this one.
