Los Angeles Angels (26-34) vs Boston Red Sox (37-24)
Saturday June 8
Fenway Park – Boston, MA
LAA: Tommy HansonBOS: Felix Doubront
Moneyline: Boston -144, Los Angeles +134
The Red Sox and Angels got postponed on Friday night, delaying their series opener. Los Angeles was creeping up the American League West standings and are in third right now but they have struggled lately going just 3-7 in their last 10 games. They are in a huge hole as the Texas Rangers and Oakland A’s are off to superb starts. You want to pin the Angels woes on OF Josh Hamilton but that wouldn’t be completely fair. Just don’t blame phenom OF Mike Trout who is enjoying another superb season as a sophomore.
Tommy Hanson has failed to live up to the expectations set for him when he came up in Atlanta. He can be an effective pitcher for sure but he has seen his ERA rise every season he has been in the Majors and it is not looking like he is going to reverse that trend this season. He is still working his way through the American League this season but did see the Red Sox once as a Brave. It was a very pleasant experience as he threw 6 innings of shutout ball against the Boston. Like so many Angels he has frustrated management with his inconsistency.
The Boston Red Sox are quietly tied for the most wins in the American League with Oakland. Considering how this team performed the last couple of seasons it is quite a good story…it is strange that nobody is really talking about them really. Boston leads the Majors with 314 runs scored so far this season as stalwarts DH David Ortiz and 2B Dustin Pedroia are enjoying fantastic seasons. The pitching has rebounded too as Jon Lester and Clay Buchholz have returned to form.
Lefty Felix Doubront is doing a great job reprising his season from last year. His ERA is almost the same (up .02), he is once again striking out more than a batter per inning and walking too many too…but he wins (4-2 record). The Sox have won his last two starts including his best start of the season the last time out at Yankee Stadium. He has never made a start against the Angels and with Boston playing well you have to like the Red Sox chances with a guy who can miss bats against a lineup that has big time potential.
Score Prediction: Boston 7 – Los Angeles 3
The Sox at home against the Angels are a good bet. With Doubront on the mound you get some more value on the home side than you will with some of the other pitchers on the staff. He may wind up needing all of those 7 runs to get the victory but I think it is a good bet on Saturday. Boston gets L.A. at a great time to jump all over them.
