NCAA Betting Total:
Alabama’s vaunted defense did an excellent job containing Heisman candidate RB Leonard Fournette from LSU last week. They face another significant challenge this week when the Tide travel to Starkville to face senior QB Dak Prescott and the MSU Bulldogs. By Tide standards, legendary sideline scowler Nick Saban and his young men have been flying under the radar in 2015, but they may just be the most talented football team in the nation.
The Tide have Mississippi State this weekend and Auburn remaining on their schedule (I’m not counting FCS guppy Charleston Southern) and they need perfection against those two SEC foes in order to make the FBS playoff picture. At 7-2, pulling an upset against the visitors means that State wouldn’t be out of the conference discussion, either. It should be a premier match-up from what probably still is the premier conference in America.
Alabama’s early-season stumble against Ole Miss is the Tide’s lone blemish this campaign. Although all the ink was spilled about Fournette last week, Alabama’s RB counterpart Derrick Henry was the player that was ascendant in that game. Henry rushed 38 times for 210 yards and three scores against a swift LSU defense. The huge junior (6”3, 242 lbs) is one of the best backs in the SEC and, with a rather underwhelming season out of QB Jake Coker and last off-season’s departure of NFL Rookie of the Year candidate WR Amari Cooper, he’s the linch-pin of ‘Bama’s offense.
The Crimson Tide have been manufacturing elite NFL talent for some time now, and the proof is in the pudding with ’Bama’s annual talent and depth on the roster. Linebacker Reggie Ragland, DLs Dalvin Tomlinson and A’Shawn Robinson and DB/special teamer Cyrus Jones virtually jump off the field with their impact. When defenders aren’t making impact plays, Henry can smash into the second level and control the clock while he’s at it.
Despite there not being as many flashy skill position players as previous years, Alabama’s 2015 team is as solid as any other unit they’ve featured in the last half-decade. They will provide senior Prescott’s fundamental challenge of the season in front of his home fans.
Prescott returned for his final collegiate season, which means that MSU continues to be relevant in the cutthroat SEC. There is enough talent on the roster that he doesn’t have to do it alone. Wide receiver De’Runnya Wilson is having a great campaign, the junior averages nearly 17 yards per catch and has eight TDs to go with it. His running mate Fred Ross is also crucial, with 51 receptions.
Still, fundamentally it’s Prescott. He’s having a basically flawless year, with a sterling 18-1 TD/INT ratio, completing almost 67% of his passes and putting up 25 total TDs. Oh, he also leads the Bulldogs in rushing by a considerable margin (Prescott has 418 yards on the ground, RB Brandon Holloway has 220).
The defense can also carry the mail, with the LB Browns (Richie and Beniquez), highly-touted DT Chris Jones and future NFLer DB Taveze Calhoun. Bulldogs head coach Dan Mullen has built a winner in a town that was an also-ran in the conference for such a long time. Regardless of how much of that is due to the acumen of Prescott, it has to feel good in Starkville recently.

In keeping with the personality of their star quarterback, there is some kind of pluckiness to the Mississippi State Bulldogs that is hard to put your finger on, but it’s undeniable. It’s a bright stage for Prescott and he will surely be up for the challenge with ’Bama coming to town. Prescott will need the game of his season to pull the upset against the Tide, but I feel like he is going to deliver and send the home fans home (and to the campus bars) euphorically.
