The off-season acquisitions seem to be paying dividends for the Edmonton Oilers and have helped create some more room on the ice for their young talent to wheel. The Oilers now have a number of gritty players who are tough to play against after adding Milan Lucic, Patrick Maroon, Adam Larsson, Kris Russell and Darnell Nurse.
Winnipeg has also added some new faces, though most come the way via drafting and development. Patrik Laine has made an immediate impact since the Jets invested the 2nd overall pick in him this past summer, amongst a group of numerous other draftees now producing for the big club.
Connor McDavid leads the entire league in scoring having registered 11 goals and 31 points in 24 games played this season. He enters the game on a six-game point streak, having recorded multiple point efforts in four of those six games. He’s a large contributor to why the Oilers sit 9th overall in goals per game, with an average of 2.9.
Milan Lucic came over after an illustrious career with the Bruins and Kings, and has provided some much needed toughness and grit playing alongside McDavid. He’s given the young superstar a lot more room to wheel, and has chipped in seven goals and 17 points of his own this year.
The defensive unit has been re-tooled under new GM, Peter Chiarelli, and while they don’t have any superstars on the back-end the group has played solid. The improvement has seen the Oil allow an average 2.6 goals per game this season, which is good for the 16th best mark in the league and a great improvement over the mark of nearly three from a season ago.
Cam Talbot has been excellent in net for Edmonton this year, owning a .920 SV% and 2.47 GAA to go along with his 10-7 record on the season. He might be the main factor on why the goals against per game has risen to the 16th overall ranking as mentioned before. The also anchors a PK unit that ranks 2nd with an efficiency rate of 88.4%.
Mark Scheifele has experienced a breakout campaign through 25 games, scoring 13 goals and tacking on another 13 assists for 26 points, which sits him in a tie for second in league scoring. It should be a fun matchup to watch, with Scheifele taking on the only player ahead of him in points, Connor McDavid.
As mentioned, rookie Patrik Laine has made an immediate impact in the ‘Peg, tying Scheifele for the team-lead in goals, with 13, which places the two in second overall in the league in goals behind another superstar, Sidney Crosby. Laine was drafted as an offensive weapon with a great shot, and he’s lived up to the hype.
The Jets appeared poised to be good for a long, long time with the core of their excellent young group being former high draft picks and developed within their system. The roster includes the likes of Scheifele, Laine, Nikolaj Ehlers, Nic Petan, Marko Dano, Tyler Myers, Josh Morrissey, Jacob Trouba, Kyler Connor, Joel Armia, Alex Burmistrov, and Blake Wheeler, all of whom were top-50 selections in the past.
Connor Hellebuyck, a former 5th round pick and still just 23-years old, is the starting netminder now that they club has admitted defeat with Ondrej Pavelec. Hellebuyck has recorded a 2.54 GAA and a .915 SV% on the season to go along with his 9-8-0 record.
