Los Angeles Dodgers vs Los Angeles Angels
Thursday May 30
Angels Stadium – Anaheim, CA
LAD: Ted Lilly (L)
LAA: Jason Vargas (L)
Moneyline: Angels -155, Dodgers +145
The Los Angeles Dodgers are still pretty lifeless…and still in last place. They did win the first two games of their set against the Angels but lost last night despite scoring two in their final at bat. L.A. really needs to get OF Matt Kemp going. He is their most dynamic offensive threat but he is stumbling along batting .251 with just 2 homers this far. 2011 is looking more and more like a career year and not the elevation of Kemp to superstar status. Don’t kill Kemp though as there is plenty of blame to go around on this team.
It seems that veteran Ted Lilly still has something left in that left arm of his. He may just be filling in but in his last turn he gave up just two hits to the MLB leading Cardinals leading the Dodgers to the victory. That was a home start in the friendly confines of Chavez Ravine and the crosstown trip might not be so cozy. Especially against an Angels team that was playing much better before the series against the storied Dodgers started.
Over the last little while the Los Angeles Angels have finally started playing the kind of baseball everyone expected. They are still well behind the Texas Rangers in the American League West standings but look like they have some fight in them afterall. It may sound like a broken record but the key is going to be getting their biggest bats going. OF Mike Trout is proving that last year was no fluke but they are getting little from the combination of OF Josh Hamilton and 1B Albert Pujols
When they are passing around blame on the Angels they should skip starter Jason Vargas. He has had a few ouchies but overall he has been really solid. In fact, the Angels have won his last 5 starts with Vargas collecting the decision in 4 of them. In those 4 he has pitched at least 7 innings and given up only two homers combined. He is certainly hittable but Vargas has learned to be a legit middle of the rotation guy over the last couple of seasons
O/U Pick: Over
Score Prediction: Angels 6 – Dodgers 4
I am not really sure if this series is a rivalry or not. Either way the Angels have been looking better of late. There is not a ton of value in taking the Angels but it is the only play I feel comfortable recommending. Don’t force it tonight. I have to sound cliche but it is a long season and exciting football bets are on the board now too.
