Friday May 31
Oriole Park at Camden Yards – Baltimore, MD
DET: Max Scherzer (R)
BAL: Miguel Gonzalez
Moneyline: Detroit -130, Baltimore +120
The Detroit Tigers limp into Baltimore having lost their last three games to Pittsburgh. 3B Miguel Cabrera may be on a tear of late but the Tigers have been just so-so with a 5-5 record in their last 10 games. Yet they still maintain 1 game lead in the American League Central over the Cleveland Indians. Now lets take a closer look at that Cabrera guy. In May he is batting .374 with 11 homers and 31 RBI. The average is impressive but I am more stoked about the way he is coming through with men on base. His RBI total for May alone would put him just outside the top 10 for the season.
Starter Max Scherzer is also having a fantastic season. His numbers are 7-0 with a WHIP of just 0.92 as he has really brought his walks down this season. Detroit is 8-2 when he starts this season and he is backed by a potent lineup making him really tough to beat. He has been dynamite away from Comerica Park with an E.R.A. of just over 1 and a K/BB ratio of 38/5. I know he is not going to finish the season undefeated but you might want to continue riding the hot hand.
The Baltimore Orioles are enjoying another solid season but the formula has been different so far this year. They are one of the better road teams in the Majors at 17-12 but their magic has seems to have rubbed off in close games. Last year closer Jim Johnson was near perfect but he has blown 4 saves in the last couple of weeks alone. The good thing is that this team seems to be developing a resilience that is going to serve them well if they are going to compete in the American League East all season long.
Friday starter Miguel Gonzalez is doing a pretty good reprisal of last year when he was an unexpected contributor in the rotation. His numbers are not quite as sharp as 2012 but not that far off and he is coming of his best start of the season, which unfortunately resulted in a loss against Toronto. At home this year his numbers are a little inflated and facing a very good Detroit lineup featuring the game’s best hitter is going to be a diffifult challenge.
Among favourites on Friday Detroit is a solid value play with Scherzer on the mound inspiring a lot of confidence. The Tigers have yet to make their push which I am sure has frustrated lots of bettors to this point but that also means the the values are their so don’t completely ignore them to spite yourself. I like them as game and series winners over the course of the weekend.
Score Prediction: Detroit 5 – Baltimore 1
