A pair of teams residing near the top of their respective conferences will do battle on Thursday night, when Original 6 foes Chicago and Montreal lock horns at the Bell Centre.
While both are near the top of their divisions and conferences, the teams are heading in opposite directions at the moment as the Habs have dropped seven of their last 10, while the Blackhawks come in riding an eight game winning streak.
With the Florida Panthers’ 12-game winning streak coming to an end in Vancouver, the Blackhawks are now the owners of the NHL’s longest current win streak. Chicago has been absolutely rolling right now, but they are doing in a way that might not be typical of the Blackhawks we’ve come to know in the past few years.
Yes, this team still bolsters a wealth of firepower and can run teams out of the rink on any given night, but the Blackhawks have been playing some stellar 200-foot hockey of late and have been backstopped by some solid goaltending from Corey Crawford. The Hawks started their win streak out in vintage fashion, winning a 7-5 track meet with the Coyotes, but have buckled down since, surrendering just 12 goals in the next seven wins. A matchup with a Montreal team that has struggled to find offense of late looks favourable for Chicago.
As mentioned, this Habs team that looked unbeatable early on, storming out to a 9-0-0 start, has cooled off dramatically. The easiest excuse would be to point to MVP goalie Carey Price’s injury, but the team has lost its way offensively and it’s hard to pin most of their losses on Mike Condon, Dustin Tokarski or Ben Scrivens.
In five of the Habs’ last six losses they have managed to score just one goal in each, and have scored more than two goals just three times in their last 12 games. The team got a spark with the return of Brendan Gallagher at the Winter Classic, where the exploded for five goals in a throttling of their longtime rivals the Boston Bruins, but it’s looking more and more like that was a one off and the team has gone right back to being stagnant on offense.

Run of form is the main thing to look at in this one, and the Blackhawks are playing their best hockey of the year right now, while the Canadiens are scuffling. Look for the Blackhawks to get out in front early and stifle the struggling Montreal forwards.
