Toronto Blue Jays (50-57) vs Los Angeles Angels (48-58)
Thursday August 1
Angels Stadium – Anaheim, CA
TOR: Josh Johnson (R)
LAA: Garrett Richards (R)
Moneyline: Los Angeles -120, Toronto +110
Toronto was awful on a recent homestand, losing the first 6 games to red hot teams fom Tampa and Los Angeles (the other one). Heading out west it looked like it might be a recipe for disaster but they just took two out of three from Oakland, winning yesterday in extra innings. This team has nowhere to go but up even if the ceiling is pretty low at this point. They should be able to keep the momentum going against an Angels team that is in the exact same situation. (but I feel like I have written that before)
Starter Josh Johnson’s first season in Toronto has been a disaster. Instead of pitching well to earn a trade or a new contract he has been mostly horrible. His ERA is 6.08, making it a half run worse than the Angels Joe Blanton – it would be the worst in the league if he had the inning to qualify. Johnson has been especially bad lately giving 7, 5 and 7 runs in his last three starts, the last of which was to Houston, which is completely unacceptable. He has just one win on the season and the Jays have won only 3 of his 14 starts.
The Angels and Blue Jays are waging an awkward battle for the title of most disappointing team in the American League. While the Blue Jays were solid in taking two of three at Oakland, Los Angeles enters this series on a 6 game losing streak, that has dropped them closer to the last place Astros than the A’s in the AL West. Hopefully they can turn things around at home as their trip to Oakland and Texas was a total bust, especially since they lost 1B Albert Pujols for the season in the process. Things are looking pretty bleak right now.
The Angels are using Garrett Richards out of the pen again against the Blue Jays. Their season is over so I suppose they are looking to see whether he can be counted on for the rotation next year or whether the bullpen is the best place for him. Things looked good his last time out as he shutout Oakland for 5 innings, earning a no decision in a 3-1 loss. He might be able to go a little deeper into the game this time around after being stretched out the last time. That is assuming he is pitching effectively though.
Garrett Richards is not the kind of pitcher who just stops a losing streak cold. Even though Johnson has been a disaster this season with the team playing better I think the Jays are the better ML play tonight. Even though Pujols absence slows down the Angels offense the over is also a very good proposition. Parlay?
Score Prediction: Toronto 6 – Los Angeles 3
