Friday June 7
Dodger Stadium – Los Angeles, CA
ATL: Paul Maholm
LAD: Hyun-Jin Ryu
Moneyline: Los Angeles -109, Atlanta -101
Atlanta had won all three of their games against the Los Angeles Dodgers heading into Thursday night but lost, getting shutout by Zach Greinke and the bullpen. Not to worry the Braves still have the largest lead of any division leader. In fact, they could lose a couple more and probably still lay claim to that. Last night was probably just a blip against a starter that has been known to spin gems every now and again. The offense, led by sluggers OF Justin Upton, 1B Freddie Freeman and utlity guy Evan Gattis should rebound tonight.
The Braves seem to be one of those franchises that is able to get the most out of pitchers. Lefty Paul Maholm has been solid for the last two years with Pittsburgh and Chicago but since coming to the Braves he is actually winning games. With 7 wins already, and playing for a first place club, it looks like he should cruise past his career high of 10 set with the Pirates back in 2007. Maholm has been getting hit on the road this season but visiting L.A. and facing a lineup with holes should help.
He has been around such a short time that many are not even sure how to pronounce OF Yasiel Puig – I’m not quite sure to be honest. The club’s top prospect came up when OF Matt Kemp was forced to the disabled list and he has given the Dodgers some much needed fire including a grand slam last night. Through just 4 games the rookie has 3 homers and 9 RBI. Most importantly for L.A. the Dodgers are 3-1 since bringing him up from the minors. The National League West could get very interesting if the Dodgers get healthy and start realizing their potential.
Import Hyun-Jin Ryu has been very good in his first season in the Majors. As this is being written there is still some doubt whether he will make this start or not given that he was scratched from his last one against the Rockies due to a sore foot. It is really too bad because the one before that was his best yet – a two hit complete game shutout of the crosstown Angels. No walks in that one was a very good sign. Ryu was just OK in his start against the Braves last month. His 5 walks in that one really hurt him.
O/U Pick: Over
Score Prediction: Atlanta 6 – Los Angeles 3
Not sure exactly how serious Ryu’s foot injury is but I don’t like the sounds of it. Given how good Atlanta has been this season why not take the extra value on the Braves on Friday night. A lot less question marks on that side even though you have to trust Maholm who likely has burned you throughout his career.
