Arizona Diamondback (37-29) vs San Diego Padres (32-34)
Friday June 14
Petco Park – San Diego, CA
ARZ: Trevor Cahill (R)
SD: Eric Stults (L)
Moneyline: San Diego -115, Arizona +105
The Arizona Diamondbacks are currently at the top of the National League’s Wild, Wild West division. So far San Diego has not been much of a factor but if the Diamondbacks drop this series then they will be very much in the picture too. Arizona is in the middle of the pack offensively and on the mound but they are getting the job done with a few key standout performers. They have been a good road team too getting more than half of their victories away from the desert.
Starter Trevor Cahill was enjoying a very fine season until his last two ugly starts. Those two outings raised his ERA from 2.88 to 4.02 – giving up 13ERs in 8 innings will do that to you. Cahill has been very stingy against the punchless Padres in the past. He has an ERA of 2.64 over 5 starts though just a 2-2 record though. Don’t be fooled by his recent performances even though they are upping the value on the Arizona side for this road series opener. He is a quality pitcher.
Winners of their last three games the San Diego Padres own the best record in the NL West over the last 10 games. With a strong performance this weekend they could reach the .500 mark and make the division a legitimate 4 team race. The fact they are competing despite having one of the least productive lineups in the Majors is a good story. They can be exciting with SS Everth Cabrera’s league leading 30 steals, half of their major leading totals.
Surprising pitching has been part of the Padres formula for success. Starter Eric Stults is actually leading the club in innings pitched as others like Edinson Volquez have been a disaster. Stults is building on last year’s success. He doesn’t dominate foes but he keeps the ball in the ballpark and doesn’t walk too many. His lone start against Arizona this season was a loss and not all that pretty with 4ERs over 6.1 innings. As the de facto ace they need a solid start to the series from Stults to set the tone.
O/U Pick: Over
Score Prediction: Arizona 5 – San Diego 3
First place team on the road in a pivotal division series – sounds like a good bet. OK, maybe that last part was a little over the top but the rest is true. Arizona is the better team all around giving them much greater room for error. Take advantage of Cahill’s recent struggles and the value they have created on the Arizona side. Forgive the push but I think you have to looks at the series price for Arizona too.
