Opening the regular season with at least a point in an NHL-record 24-straight games is something that nobody could have expected of the Chicago Blackhawks. The same can be said of their back-to-back regulation losses to the Colorado Avalanche and Edmonton Oilers. After tallying 45 of a possible 48 points through their first 24 games, the Blackhawks have been held pointless in two sports betting games since, and that raises an interesting question. Playing seven games in 11 days might have something to do with Chicago having its incredible run halted, but truth be told, a little adversity could be the best thing for this team’s long-term fortunes at this point.
There is something to be said about peaking too early, which is something that has happened with many Presidents trophy winners over the years. It is one thing to dominate for an entire regular season. It is completely different for a team to be able to win the 16 games that matter the most, which is what it takes to win the Stanley Cup. Everything went in favor of the Blackhawks early on in the year, but that won’t help get them ready for what awaits them in the playoffs. Chicago has to be ready for an absolute dogfight in the postseason, and that is why this next sportsbook stretch could actually benefit them.
The Blackhawks are expected to be without a couple of key players including Patrick Sharp, who is expected to miss 3-4 weeks with an injured shoulder. Sharp has struggled to stay healthy in recent years, but he did have 18 points through Chicago’s first 24 games and was a plus-seven. It may be coincidental that the first game Sharp missed was the one they lost, but in a lockout-shortened season there are bound to be injuries that affect every team’s lineup. The ability to replace Sharp and prepare certain players for the possibility that the Blackhawks could be without some star players when it matters most is an intangible this online sports betting team will benefit from developing.
With an offense that ranks fifth in the NHL in scoring and a defense that has allowed the second fewest goals in the NHL on average, Chicago is easily the most complete team in the league. Patrick Kane and captain Jonathan Toews have paced the Blackhawks with a combined 53 points through 26 games, and while the scoring depth has also been excellent, the most impressive aspect of this team’s performance has been its ability to defend. Netminder Corey Crawford is 11-2-3 with a 1.91 goals against average, and while he has been better this season than he was a year ago, so has the team in front of him. Chicago has shown it can win 5Dimes games in a variety of different ways, and that will be key in the playoffs.
A four-game road trip that includes a visit to the west coast will be a tough test for the Blackhawks, regardless of what they have done so far this season. With a comfortable lead atop the standings Chicago can afford to be confronted with a little adversity, and it will be interesting to see how he responds.
