A pair of bottom feeders in the NHL’s Eastern Conference will square off on Friday night as the Leafs pay a visit to the Hurricanes in North Carolina.
This is the first of three meetings between a pair of teams that were both on the outside looking in last year at playoff time
Puck drop is slated for 7 p.m. and the goalies are expected to be James Reimer for the Leafs and Cam Ward for the Hurricanes
Toronto Maple Leads
This is a Leafs team that everyone expected to be right where they are when the season started. A new head coach and front office has been preaching patience and it actually has looked like it might be worth it…eventually.
The Leafs have been playing much better hockey for most of this season under new coach Mike Babcock and despite a very tough start that saw them win just one game in the month of October, they have righted the ship to a point and have earned points in seven of nine games in November, including five wins.
The Leafs will go with James Reimer in goal, and he has been the better of the two goalies, outplaying Jonathan Bernier in every sense.
This team seems to play better when Reimer is in between the pipes and they’ll be looking to beat a team that is wallowing near the bottom of the East.
The Canes aren’t having a very good start themselves this season, with an identical six wins as Toronto to this point, but taking the opposite approach. The Canes weren’t horrible in October, winning five games, but have managed just a single win since, and come into Friday on a four game losing streak.
What will be interesting is to see how the matchup between Eric Staal and Dion Phaneuf shakes out and this could be a feisty affair. Staal fired a slapshot by Phaneuf into an empty net last year and glared at the Leafs’ captain after doing so.
Last year’s spineless Leafs team slinked off the ice, making no effort to defend their leader. The Canes will be well served to come out again with some swagger and take it to a Leafs team that works much harder than last year. If they think they’re getting an uninspired group like a year ago, it could be a tough night.
4* Free NHL Betting Prediction: Leafs +1.5
This might not be a thriller but it should make for some interesting story lines, including that between the two captains Staal and Phaneuf. The Leafs have not been beaten by more than one goal since a Nov. 4 loss to the Jets by a count of 4-2, with the fourth goal being deposited into an empty net.
The Canes on the other hand have won just two games by more than a single goal and have been challenged offensively of late, scoring just five goals in their current four game losing skid.
Don’t count on them running the score up on Friday, take the Leafs to cover in this one, in a game that could likely see OT.
