Many will hope for a series for the ages in this one, as the Toronto Maple Leafs, who are in the playoffs for the first time since 2011, take on the extremely tough Washington Capitals in a best of seven series.
In the regular season, the Toronto Maple Leafs went 1-1-1 against the Capitals, with the win coming in a 4-2 effort in Toronto back in November. The Leafs have played decent hockey against Washington, but have had a tough time stopping the team offensively.
Toronto Maple Leafs
Finishing tied for 3rd with 95 points in the Atlantic Division, the Toronto Maple Leafs got the second Wild Card spot because of a tiebreaker scenario with the Boston Bruins. The Leafs had an up-and-down year, figuring things out while suiting up a lot of rookies.
Toronto finished with a 40-27-15 record and those 15 overtime loss points helped catapult the team into the playoffs. It remains to be seen if this team can win a playoff series but the young guys will be exciting to watch.

Rookie and 2016 #1 overall draft pick Auston Matthews had a wonderful first year for the Leafs. After an unbelievable debut game that saw him net four goals, Matthews went through typical first-year slumps, but caught on quickly, finishing with 40 goals and 29 assists.
He led an offense that finished 5th in the NHL in goals this season, averaging 3.06 per game. A pleasant surprise offensively came from 26-year old “veteran” Nazem Kadri, who finished with 32 goals and 29 assists. His physicality and scoring ability will be crucial for Toronto in round one.
Washington Capitals
The top seed in the Eastern Conference belongs to the Washington Capitals, who finished the year 55-19-8 and tallied 118 points whilst playing in the tough Metropolitan Division.
Washington was phenomenal on both sides of the ice, finishing 3rd in goals and 1st in goals against. The Capitals feel that this is their year to win a Stanley Cup and they’ll try to take care of a youthful, inexperienced Toronto squad quickly.

By Alex Ovechkin standards, this was a down year for the captain and future Hall of Famer. However, he still finished with 33 goals and 36 assists. He had some scoring slumps but expect that to be behind him as his playoff experience and leadership should take over.
He’ll have a lot of help offensively from T.J. Oshie. The center finished the year with 33 goals and 23 assists in 68 games and he’ll be looking to win with Washington now, as he hits free agency in the summer.
Free Toronto Maple Leafs vs. Washington Capitals Playoff Series Prediction:
As much fun as the Toronto Maple Leafs are to watch, the defense is the major concern in this series. With how good Washington is on both ends of the ice, it’s hard to imagine Toronto grabbing more than a game or two in this series.
Washington wins the series in five games.
