Who had the Caps as the favorite to win the Cup back in October?
But along with Washington there are some usual suspects that could win it all this year. Could there be some sleepers out there – the Ducks, the Penguins and the Habs are getting no love right now.
Let’s take a look at all of the updated NHL Futures odds to hoist Lord Stanley’s Cup and look into our crystal ball.
Washington Capitals +400
You absolutely have to love what the Capitals have done so far this season – they have an astounding 11 point lead in the East and have the all-around game for a long playoff run – good goaltending, terrific special teams and a game changing forward named Alex Ovechkin.

Does the lack of serious playoff experience scare me? Yes indeed. But my guess is that this team makes a couple of key moves at the trade deadline to minimize that fact. Washington is far and away the best in the East – deserving Cup faves at this point in time.
Chicago Blackhawks +550
The Hawks started slowly but are in their rightful spot now – first in the Central and looking like the Best in the West. Chicago is simply too talented all over the rink to be ignored. Add in the fact that they have a superb mix of youth and unmatched experienced on the big stage and the Hawks have to be in the conversation to win it all again this year.
Health is key for this team but if Patrick Kane, Jonathan Toews, Marian Hossa, Duncan Keith, Brent Seabrook, Niklas Hjalmarsson and Corey Crawford can stay on the ice there is no reason the Hawks can’t win it all!
Los Angeles Kings +750
Let’s face it – The Kings are built to go a long ways into the Stanley Cup playoffs. They are deep, they are rugged and they are sound in absolutely every aspect of the game. We can’t forget about their recent playoff experience either! It looks like yet another Chicago/LA Western Final to me – my guess is that the winner of that series will hoist the Cup.

Names like Anze Kopitar, Jeff Carter, Dustin Brown, Marian Gaborik, Tyler Toffoli and Tanner Pearson up front, Drew Doughty, Jake Muzzin, Matt Greene and Christian Erhoff on defense and Jonathan Quick between the pipes is no joke folks -the Kings are a contender for sure!
Dallas Stars +1100
The Stars have come down to earth just a bit the last few weeks – they look more like a B+ teams rather than an A+ squad – right about where they should be in my eyes. It’s true that they have size, speed, a ton of offensive skill, and decent goaltending. Tyler Seguin, Jamie Benn and Patrick Sharp offer up one of the best power plays in the game. Jason Spezza, Ales Hemsky, Johnny Oduya and Vernon Fiddler give them some veteran experience and the goaltending duo of Kari Lehtonen and Antti Niemi provide respectable goaltending do for the team.
Do I like the Stars – Yes. Do I think they can compete with the Big Two in the West at playoff time – Not quite yet!
Tampa Bay Lightning +1400
The Lightning are surging folks! This team made the Finals in 2015 and is finally starting to resemble the team that snuck up on everyone. They have virtually the same roster as last year, they should be able to get some return on Jonathan Drouin and they could go after some other help at the trade deadline.
To me the Lightning look like a team that could beat any one of the top Eastern contenders. Assuming the Steven Stamkos contract situation doesn’t become an even bigger distraction I like the Lightning to make another run this year. They may not win the Cup but should make it interesting!
St. Louis Blues +1600
The Blues are a team built in the LA Kings mold – big, fast and extremely tough to play against. But until Ken Hitchcock can erase the memories of disappointing playoff performances for this team, I’m staying away. The fact that they haven’t looked elite so far in the Regular Season also has me looking elsewhere.
Florida Panthers +1600
This has been a nice story but to think they will win the Cup is a pipe-dream.
New York Rangers +1600
The Rangers were one of the favorites heading into the season as one o the favorites but have slipped down the Rankings. Henrik Lundqvist makes them an instant contender – the depth also makes them an intriguing +1600. That said this team has looked a whole lot better in past years – and they didn’t win the Cup in those seasons. So winning when their team looks average seems like a longshot to me!
Anaheim Ducks +1600
The Ducks were brutal to start the season and their Superstars continue to be disappointing (Ryan Getzlaf has three goals this year – three!!!). But the Ducks are coming on – the old adage –it’s not how you start, it’s how you finish comes into play here. Anaheim is far too good a team to not make some noise in the playoffs. My bet is that they peak at the right time and make a run.
With LA and Chicago in their way however – their run will be cut short.
- Detroit Red Wings +2000
- Minnesota Wild +2200
- New York Islanders +2200
Boston Bruins +2500
Boston has the experience to make things interesting in what looks like a wide-open Eastern Conference. Tuukka Rask is better than he’s been playing and the Bruins as a team have a ton of young experienced talent. Boston is a shot in the dark but pretty good value nonetheless at +2500.
- San Jose Sharks +2500
Pittsburgh Penguins +2500
The Pens at +2500? They have been a disappointment for sure this season but will be better from here on in.
[dfads params=’groups=235&limit=1&return_javascript=1′]
Marc-Andre Fleury will be a question mark as always as we head into the playoffs but if the Regular Season is any indication, the Pens keeper could be the least of their worries going forward.
Something is missing with this club though – not Cup-worthy this year!
Montreal Canadiens +2800
The Habs don’t even sit in a playoff spot right now!! Hard to believe after ruling the NHL for the first month of the season. I, like many are willing to give them a pass – when Carey Price returns from injury (which should come in the next couple of weeks) this team is totally different!
The offense is unflattering but it always has been for this team. “The best offense is a good defense” rings true here – a rested and motivated Price makes Montreal the best value on the board right now. At +2800 they could offer us a very nice payday in the summer!
