NHL Power Rankings November 8
Looking for our updated NHL Power Rankings? Here’s version #3. A month of the NHL season is in the books – it’s time that the cream really starts to rise to the top in the Standings. There are some great surprises over the first 12 or so games of the season – the Oilers and the Senators have played very well and there have been some colossal disappointments – the Stars and the Predators for instance sit in the bottom third of the NHL Overall standings.

There has been a major shake-up in the Power Rankings over the last couple of weeks – the Habs are clearly the best team in the game and the Canucks who started the year on fire have fallen off a cliff.
So where does your favorite team sit a dozen or so games into the NHL Regular Season? Let’s take a look in Dave B’s bi-weekly NHL Power Rankings.
1. Montreal (10-1-1)
– Two Weeks Ago: 3
It’s pretty hard to argue with a team that has just one Regulation loss is the first month (although it was a 10-0 shellacking!)
I am giving Montreal a mulligan over that effort – with the best goaltender on the planet and a team that seems to have gelled already, the Habs are looking an awful lot like the team to beat this year!
2. New York Rangers (10-3-0)
– Two Weeks Ago: 12
The Rangers are on fire – they are the best goal scoring team in the NHL (55 so far) and they have given up just 29 – 11 players have at least nine points so far – unreal.
They enter the week on a five game win streak and in second in the Overall Standings and an easy #2 on this week’s Rankings.
3. Chicago (9-3-1)
– Two Weeks Ago: 16
That’s better – this team was #16 two weeks ago but have found their groove and have gone 8-1-1 in their last 10 games overall.
They have won six straight games heading into the week – Marian Hossa is making a difference again and Corey Crawford has been terrific – a .936 save percentage so far and a 2.01 GAA.

4. Washington (8-2-1)
– Two Weeks Ago: 5
The Caps also enter the week on fire – five straight wins. They have gone 8-2-0 in their last 10 games overall thanks to strong defense and goaltending – a league third-best 24 goals against so far.
Once the offense gets going (just 33 goals for so far) Washington is a scary team.
5. Pittsburgh (8-2-2)
– Two Weeks Ago: 6
The Penguins have been playing some good hockey indeed – they are 6-2-2 in their last 10 games overall – Sidney Crosby has scored in five of his last six games and the offensive balance is there – 5 players have 10 or more points so far.
Pittsburgh is deep, they are talented and as advertised!
6. Tampa Bay (7-4-1)
– Two Weeks Ago: 2
The Lightning have yet to catch fire but they are still top 8 in the Overall Standings. When they do find their form, Tampa will be a tough team to contend with! Steven Stamkos and Nikita Kucherov have been terrific so far and the power play is lethal.
Defensively Tampa has been just OK – something that will have to improve for them to be a top 5 club!
7. Edmonton (9-3-1)
– Two Weeks Ago: 4
The Oilers sit fourth in the Overall Standings – so why the slip in the Rankings? It is the thought that a slide seems inevitable. It may not happen but it just seems like it HAS to!
Conor McDavid continues to sizzle (more than a point per game), Cam Talbot has been terrific and the team is 5-1-1 on the road already in this young season. The suffering appears to be over Oilers fans!
8. St. Louis (7-4-2)
– Two Weeks Ago: 1
The Blues are the only team in the top 10 that has a minus goal differential (-3) – something that should be a concern going forward. They have only scored 31 goals in their 13 games as well – not great.
9. Anaheim (6-5-2)
– Two Weeks Ago: 22
The Ducks started the season slowly but have been much better of late – they enter the week on a two game win streak and are 6-3-1 in their last 10 games overall.
The team has allowed just 30 goals in their 13 games and with Perry and Getzlaf up front, Anaheim looks as dangerous as ever.
10. Minnesota (6-4-1)
– Two Weeks Ago: 11
The Wild are 6-3-1 in their last 10 games but enter the week on a two game losing streak.
[dfads params=’groups=234&limit=1&return_javascript=1′]
It’s a good thing the team has until Thursday off! Minnesota is well-coached, they are a deep team and seem to have allowed a league-low 22 goals in their 11 games so far. Such a good defensive team deserves to be in my top 10!
11. Ottawa (7-4-0)
– Two Weeks Ago: 18
The Sens are playing some inspired hockey spurned by Craig Anderson whose wife was diagnosed with Cancer a couple of weeks ago.
Anderson has recorded a terrific 2.21 GAA and .930 GAA this season, Erik Karlsson has been Erik Karlsson and even Dion Phaneuf has been s a standout for this club. Right now the Sens are top 10 in the Overall Standings and looking pretty good to stay there.
12. Toronto (5-4-3)
– Two Weeks Ago: 24
Ya- I’m giving the kids the benefit of the doubt here – mostly because Frederik Andersen has finally found his form.
Auston Matthews, William Nylander and Mitch Marner all have at least 10 points so far this season and the team as a whole looks like a professional club for the first time in a while.
13. Columbus (5-3-2) – Two Weeks Ago: 27
14. Philadelphia (6-6-1) – Two Weeks Ago: 15
15. Detroit (6-6-1) – Two Weeks Ago: 9
16. New Jersey (5-3-3) – Two Weeks Ago: 20
17. Los Angeles (6-6-0) – Two Weeks Ago: 21
18. Boston (6-5-0) – Two Weeks Ago: 13
19. Buffalo (5-4-2) – Two Weeks Ago: 26
20. Florida (5-6-1) – Two Weeks Ago: 7
21. San Jose (6-6-0) – Two Weeks Ago: 10
22. Dallas (4-5-2) – Two Weeks Ago: 14
23. Winnipeg (5-6-1) – Two Weeks Ago: 25
24. Colorado (5-6-0) – Two Weeks Ago: 23
25. Calgary (5-7-1) – Two Weeks Ago: 29
26. New York Islanders (4-6-2) – Two Weeks Ago: 19
27. Nashville (3-5-3) – Two Weeks Ago: 17
28. Carolina (3-5-3) – Two Weeks Ago: 28
29. Vancouver (4-7-1) – Two Weeks Ago: 8
30. Arizona (4-7-0) – Two Weeks Ago: 30
