The next two weeks will be critical for a number of NHL squads to determine which side of the fence they will land. Some teams are playing themselves into playoff contention while others are stumbling out of the top eight in their respective Conferences.
So where does your favorite team sit as we head down the stretch in the NHL Regular Season? Let’s take a look in Dave B’s bi-weekly NHL Power Rankings.
1. Washington
(39-11-6) – Two Weeks Ago: 1
No surprise here! The Caps are 8-2 in their last 10 games overall and have won 12 straight games on home ice while scoring 5+ goals in their last 11 at Verizon Center.
They are second in the league in goals for (192) and they are best in terms of goals against (121). That equates to a +71 goal differential – incredible! Regular Season isn’t a problem for these guys – success will be measured in the playoffs!
2. Minnesota
(37-12-6) – Two Weeks Ago: 2
The Wild lead the West with 80 points. They are 7-2-1 in their last 10 games overall and like the Capitals have been very good in both ends of the rink – 187 goals for so far and 129 against. The Wild are perhaps the most complete team in the NHL right now – all four lines contribute regularly, the defense is strong and Devan Dubnyk has been remarkable between the pipes.
Like Washington though – playoff success has eluded this team.
3. Chicago
(35-17-5) – Two Weeks Ago: 6
The Blackhawks enter this week on a five game win streak – most of which has come on the road during the tough Western road swing. They start their bye week Monday – a rested Blackhawks team down the stretch is a scary thing especially with the overall talent and experience on the roster.
4. Pittsburgh
(34-13-7) – Two Weeks Ago: 8
The Pens have gone 6-2-2 in their last 10 games overall – and they have done it without Evgeni Malkin who should return this week from a two week absence this week.
The Penguins are the top scoring team in the NHL to nobody’s surprise (193) – and that is with Sid the Kid missing a few games to start the year and with Gino on the sidelines the last couple of weeks.
Pittsburgh is dangerous as ever right now – be interesting to see what they do at the trade deadline!
5. New York Rangers
(36-18-1) – Two Weeks Ago: 10
The Rangers have woken up – they are 8-2-0 in their last 10 games overall and they enter this week on a five game win streak.
The team is third best in the league in terms of goals for (189) and Henrik Lundqvist is finally playing the consistent, solid hockey we have become used to. There are no holes on the Rangers right now – they may even get better at the trade deadline.
6. Columbus
(35-14-5) – Two Weeks Ago: 5
The once untouchable Blue Jackets have stumbled recently – they are 5-4-1 in their last 10 games overall. Is there some turmoil? Perhaps – players held a meeting with Coach John Tortarella essentially telling him to “Lay off” last week.
If he does indeed do that, Columbus should be fine – they have perhaps the best power play in the game and have Sergei Bobrovsky patrolling their crease.
7. San Jose
(29-19-8) – Two Weeks Ago: 4
The Sharks have been slipping down the standings which is cause for at least a little concern. They are 1-4 in their last five games but return home after what seemed like a decade-long road trip.
Brent Burns now has 24 goals on the year – he alone is reason that San Jose should stick around – the supporting cast is pretty good too!
8. Edmonton
(28-15-8) – Two Weeks Ago: 3
The Oilers are 5-4-1 in their last 10 games and didn’t look good last time out – a 5-1 home loss to the Blackhawks. Goals have become an issue for this team and so has the play of goaltender Cam Talbot who was pulled twice last week.
Young teams will go through their down-times for sure – it looks like the Oilers are a tired bunch right now.
9. Montreal
(31-19-8) – Two Weeks Ago: 9
The Habs are just 1-5-1 in their last 10 games. So how do they stay at #9? It is the fact that they are getting some injured players back and that their 5-day bye week is finally upon them.
Once recharged we can expect Montreal to be an elite club again – they are too well coach, too solid defensively and too deep up front not to be.
10. Ottawa
(29-18-6) – Two Weeks Ago: 11
The Senators enter this week having won two straight games – they are 5-3-2 in their last 10 games overall.
The team got a huge boost Saturday when goaltender Craig Anderson returned to the lineup after spending some time with his wife who is battling cancer – he posted a 3-0 shutout over the Islanders.
Despite having surrendered as many goals this season as they have scored the Sens are right in the thick of the Atlantic Division race.
11. Anaheim
(29-18-10) – Two Weeks Ago: 7
The Ducks slip in the Rankings thanks to a 4-5-1 stretch. They still possess two superb lines and are still terrific at home. The Ducks are an experienced team that should turn things around.
They stay top dirty dozen this week but barely!
12. Toronto
(25-18-11) – Two Weeks Ago: 12
The Leafs enter this week on a two game losing streak but I am not worried – the youth on this team has learned to win under Mike Babcock and they aren’t satisfied with being a decent team.
The youngsters Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner haven’t slowed down – veteran like Nazem Kadri (nine games without scoring) have to get going for this team – the kids can’t do it all!
13. Los Angeles (28-23-4) – Two Weeks Ago: 14
14. St. Louis (29-22-5) – Two Weeks Ago: 18
15. New York Islanders (25-19-10) – Two Weeks Ago: 17
16. Boston (29-23-6) – Two Weeks Ago: 16
17. Nashville (27-21-8) – Two Weeks Ago: 13
18. Philadelphia (27-22-7) – Two Weeks Ago: 15
19. Florida (24-20-10) – Two Weeks Ago: 24
20. Calgary (28-25-3) – Two Weeks Ago: 20
21. New Jersey (23-22-10) – Two Weeks Ago: 27
22. Tampa Bay (25-24-7) – Two Weeks Ago: 26
23. Carolina (24-22-7) – Two Weeks Ago: 21
24. Vancouver (25-25-6) – Two Weeks Ago: 19
25. Buffalo (23-23-10) – Two Weeks Ago: 23
26. Winnipeg (25-29-4) – Two Weeks Ago: 22
27. Dallas (22-25-10) – Two Weeks Ago: 25
28. Detroit (22-24-10) – Two Weeks Ago: 28
29. Arizona (18-28-7) – Two Weeks Ago: 29
30. Colorado (15-36-2) – Two Weeks Ago: 30
