The top Wild Card team in the New York Rangers meets the 2nd ranked team out of the Eastern Conference in the Montreal Canadiens for this round one Eastern Conference playoff series.
The regular season series completely favored the Canadiens, who won all three matchups between these two teams, and the Canadiens will hope that trend continues in this best of seven series.
New York Rangers
The New York Rangers had a good season all around, finishing 4th in the toughest division in the NHL, the Metropolitan. The team finished with 102 points and a 48-28-6 record, but didn’t get a single win against the Canadiens.
The key to the Rangers’ success all season has been the offense. The team ranks 4th in the league in goals, tallying 256 for the entire season. The Rangers will look for that to continue, but it will be a tough task against a great defensive team in Montreal.

Four skaters put up more than 20 goals this season and those guys will be heavily relied on to help New York win. It starts with left wing Chris Kreider, who put up 28 goals and 25 assists.
Right behind him in goals was Michael Grabner, who tallied 27 goals along with 13 assists. Rick Nash came on strong despite some injuries throughout the year, netting 23 goals and 15 assists, while J.T. Miller finished with 22 goals and 34 assists.
With these four skaters on the top six for New York, the team will have opportunities to score, but they’ll need to capitalize against a high-caliber Canadiens defense.
Montreal Canadiens
Finishing atop the Atlantic Division, the Montreal Canadiens had a good season. The team tallied 103 points and finished with a record of 47-26-9.
Many will argue that playing against a very weak Atlantic Division had a lot to do with it, but the Canadiens have the ability to beat anyone.
There’s a reason why Montreal won all three games against New York this season. The defense was great all year, finishing 4th in the NHL in goals against. The team gave up just 2.46 goals per game.

Starting goaltender Carey Price had a lot to do with that stat. This season, he finished with a record of 37-20-5 with a 2.23 goals against average and a .923 save percentage. He’ll be the rock for this team and a lot of the success hinges on his play quality.
Offensively, a lot will hinge on captain Max Pacioretty. He led the team in goals with 35, while also tallying 32 assists. The top line runs through him and he’ll dictate how the team starts off in each game.
Free New York Rangers vs. Montreal Canadiens Playoff Series Prediction:
The Rangers didn’t finish the season strong, losing five of the final eight games. With Montreal’s defense and Carey Price in goal, it’s going to be tough for those big forwards to score and the Rangers don’t have a lot of offense outside of that top six.
I like Montreal to win the series in six games.
