BETTING NBA FUTURES?
The new year is upon us, and it brings NBA bettors many more opportunities to cash in. With the slate of games having slowed down somewhat, it’s a good time to take another look at the futures board for chances to beat the books on some long-term plays, with odds that haven’t seen much action recently.

The NBA season is nearing its midway point, and teams have given observers a good idea of who they are, and what to expect from them moving forward. Here’s a look at three top teams, three mid-level teams, and three long shots, with a recommended pick from each category.

Golden State Warriors 6-5
The Warriors enjoyed a record-breaking start to the 2015-16 campaign, all while defending their title. The team is playing a brand of basketball that’s changing the way other teams are playing the game. For as long as Stephen Curry remains at the top of his game, the Warriors will be a force to be reckoned with.
Cleveland Cavaliers 5-2
Another force to be reckoned with in the NBA is whatever team LeBron James is currently playing for. The Cavaliers still have some deficiencies on their roster, but King James remains the glue that holds things together. If they can get healthy at the right time, watch out.
San Antonio Spurs 7-2
The Warriors’ terrific run hid a brilliant start to the season for the Spurs. The team’s aging core remains capable of dominating games, while the pieces around them are better than ever. It normally takes new faces time to get going in Gregg Popovich’s system, but LaMarcus Aldridge has hit the ground running.
The play: Spurs 7-2

Indiana Pacers 25-1
There was some concern entering the season about the Pacers’ lack of frontcourt depth, but in today’s age of small ball, Indiana has established itself as one of the teams to beat in the Eastern Conference. A healthy Paul George has made all the difference, with the team re-establishing its once dominant home court advantage.
Toronto Raptors 30-1
The Raptors’ offseason addition of DeMarre Carroll has provided the boost many expected it would, but a less high-profile addition in bringing in Bismack Biyombo has been just as important in getting the Raptors going this season. Keeping Jonas Valanciunas healthy will be important for playoff success.
Houston Rockets 60-1
The Rockets had a very slow start to the season, but they don’t seem to be all that worried about it. There’s a lot of talent on the roster, so don’t be surprised if they figure things out at some point. They could be a very dangerous team if they get going at the right time.
The play: Raptors 30-1
Memphis Grizzlies 100-1
The Grizzlies have stumbled out of the gate a bit, but they’ve shown in recent seasons that the second half is when they play their best basketball. Don’t be overly surprised if the team makes a run up the Western Conference standings and establishes itself as a legitimate contender by the time postseason play opens.
Charlotte Hornets 200-1
The Charlotte franchise has been a laughing stock of the NBA for some time, but things are beginning to come together in North Carolina. The team has quietly played some terrific offensive basketball, and if they can sneak into the postseason, will be a dangerous opponent.

New Orleans Pelicans 300-1
In a time in which big-men are an afterthought, the Pelicans have arguably the most dominant big man in all of basketball. A slow start hurt the team’s postseason chances, but things have turned around in New Orleans, and they’ve played much better basketball of late, making this a good opportunity to buy low.
The play: Grizzlies 100-1
