As always, our rankings will look at the entire body of work for all 30 teams, with a specific emphasis on recent trends.
This week, we have a new squad in the top spot. Funny how when a top-tier team gets one of the greatest point guards of all time back on its roster it moves up to No. 1 in the league…
1. Houston Rockets
Have yourself a November, Houston Rockets.

During the league’s second official month of action, the James Harden-led squad from Texas went 12-1, got its superstar point guard in Chris Paul back and managed to win 11 games by double digits.
The Rockets are a legitimate contender, in case you were wondering, and James Harden is the legitimate No. 1 MVP candidate at this point in the season—in case you were wondering.
2. Boston Celtics
Although Harden is the No. 1 MVP candidate in all the land, there’s a certain Sir Kyrie who may have something to say about that.
The Celtics are rolling right now, despite a bad loss to the Detroit Pistons on Nov. 27.
The C’s went 13-2 in the month of November, and they are going to be a threat until the Cleveland Cavaliers figure out whatever it is they’re doing.
3. Golden State Warriors
The Golden State Warriors are the Golden State Warriors. We can’t put it any more simply.

Yes, this team has lost two of its last five. But those are the only two games this squad lost in the month of November.
Health has been an issue for this squad, but if you’re reading the tea leaves, the organization is putting together a clever plan to get Draymond Green, Kevin Durant and Stephen Curry rest.
Don’t worry about this Warriors team. It’s Top 3 for a reason—and it’ll be No. 1 soon enough.
4. Cleveland Cavaliers
The Cleveland Cavaliers have had a legitimate turnaround. If there were semi-concerns about Golden State’s early start, there were legitimate concerns about what the hell the Cavs were doing with their old roster and terrible defense.
And yet! We have a turnaround!
Cleveland looks great right now. The team has won 10 in a row and LeBron James looks like a legitimate MVP candidate (althought we could probably say the former every season of his entire career).
if the Cavs can keep this up, they won’t leave the Top 5 all season.
5. San Antonio Spurs
How…THE HELL…are the San Antonio Spurs doing what they’re doing with Kawhi Leonard?
This team has gone 14-7 on the season and won 10 of its last 13 games. Tony Parker has returnet, but this really comes down to Gregg Popovich instilling a culture that doesn’t let players take nights off.
6. Toronto Raptors
The Toronto Raptors have a (bad?) reputation as being a great regular-season team. That applies to this season, as well.
This team is looking good, currently sitting in the fourth spot out East. But it’s going to need a serious step-up if it plans on over taking the Cavs or Celtics come playoff time.
7. Detroit Pistons
Where in the world did the Detroit Pistons come from?
This group is 14-6, sits second in the Eastern Conference and has won four of its last five games.
The Pistons are doing serious work, but the question is: Is this sustainable?
Tobias Harris has been great, Andre Drummond has been a revolution and, unfortunately, Avery Bradley is discontent.
Those things will balance out—but the Pistons look good at the quarter-mark of the season.
8. Philadelphia 76ers
TRUST. THE. PROCESS.
As long as Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid are playing, this team has a chance—and is going to be the most entertaining group on the floor.
JJ Redick is nice. Robert Covington is great (and underrated). And Markelle Fultz is a mystery.
But what we know is that this group is awesome.
9. Portland Trail Blazers
The Blazers are playing defense.
Hold up…let me repeat…
THE BLAZERS ARE PLAYING DEFENSE.

Admitedly, Portland failed to play any sort of defense against the Milwaukee Bucks on Thursday. But this team, at large this season, is doing damage on that end of the floor.
Plus—the way the Western Conference is falling apart? Give this group the benefit of the doubt.
Portland could end up being a top-four or top-five team come playoff time.
10. Minnesota Timberwolves
The Timberwolves have too much talent not to be in the Top 10 at the quarter-mark of the season.
That said: They need to figure out defense.
Karl-Anthony Towns is a magician of a center and Jimmy Butler is obvious a superstar. Andrew Wiggins is also finding a way to make a name for himself.
But with Tom Thibodeau as your coach, you have to play D.
Figure that end of the court out, and this team could be Top 5 almost immediately.
