WHERE DO TEAMS STAND IN MLB?
After some MLB Power Rankings? Here our year-end edition. The 2016 Regular Season has come to an end – time to look take a look at all of the teams and where they landed on the bi-weekly Power Rankings.
For the most part the Rankings don’t look a whole lot different than they did a fortnight ago – the dominant teams are still dominating and the basement teams still struggled. Just 10 teams remain in the hunt for the World Series – congrats to those!
Version 10.0 – 2016 MLB Power Rankings
So where does your favorite team sit at the conclusion of the 2016 MLB Regular Season? Let’s break it down in the October 3 edition of Dave B’s MLB Power Rankings.
1. Chicago Cubs (103-58)
Two Weeks Ago: 1
Not much doubt about this one. The Cubs have been at the top of the Rankings all season long and ended with the best record – BY FAR in MLB.
The pitching, the defense and the offense all worked in perfect unison all season – my guess it doesn’t stop until they win a LONG awaited World Series.
2. Boston Red Sox (93-69)
Two Weeks Ago: 2
The Red Sox lost two of their last three games over the weekend but were scorching down the stretch. The Sox had the best offense in the Bigs all season long, Rick Porcello will likely win the Cy Young and some guy names David Ortiz has this team inspired to do some special things in October.
3. Texas Rangers (95-67)
Two Weeks Ago: 4
The Rangers finished with the best record in the AL and now await the winner of the Wild Card game Tuesday. They will have home field throughout the playoffs – a huge advantage to a team that went 5-5 in their last 10 games overall. Texas is and has been one of the most well-rounded teams in MLB all season long – a deserving #3.
4. Washington Nationals (95-67)
Two Weeks Ago: 3
The Nationals are a banged up bunch but they did go 6-4 in their last 10 games and did win their final two games of the Regular Season despite having some key starters out.

They slide because of their health but if all hands are on deck, the Nats will be a threat to the Cubs for sure.
5. Cleveland Indians (94-67)
Two Weeks Ago: 5
No reason to drop the Indians in the Rankings – they won their final three games of the season and head into a showdown with the Red Sox in good form. 4
Cleveland has some sneaky good pitching and a serious offense – a scary out indeed as we head into the postseason.
6. Los Angeles Dodgers (91-71)
Two Weeks Ago: 6
The Dodgers draw the Nationals in the ALDS which is tough indeed. But the Dodgers’ team was built for this time of the year.
Of concern is the fact that they did lose their last three games of the Regular Season and the fact that the offense has remained a tad sporadic.
7. Baltimore Orioles (89-73)
Two Weeks Ago: 7
The Orioles went 7-3 in their last 10 games and now face the prospect of heading to Toronto to play the Wild Card game. The O’s are a bit of a tough team to figure out – the pitching on paper still looks a little thin – if the power #s aren’t there the team could struggle.
Still, the batting order is one to be feared – the pitching has to be just OK going forward.
8. Toronto Blue Jays (89-73)
Two Weeks Ago: 8
The Jays were pretty bad in September but won two of three in Boston over the weekend – reason for some optimism going forward. The pitching is surprisingly strong and the lineup is dangerous throughout.
The only question is whether or not this team can put it all together at the right time.
9. New York Mets (87-75)
Two Weeks Ago: 10
The Mets went 7-3 down the stretch to claim the first Wild Card spot and now host the Giants – interesting indeed! The Mets had more than their share of injuries this past season but they didn’t stop them from qualifying for the postseason for the second year in a row.
The pitching is still strong and the hitting led by Yoenis Cespedes has done its part.
10. San Francisco Giants (87-75)
Two Weeks Ago: 12
The Giants won their final four games of the Regular Season to grab the final Wild Card spot in the NL. They were one of the best teams on the planet before crashing down to earth post-All Star Break when they went 30-42.
Still, this team is built to win in the playoffs – the rotation is strong and the offense is just good enough. It’s an odd-numbered year – typically when the Giants shine in the playoffs!
11. Detroit Tigers (86-75)
Two Weeks Ago: 14
The Tigers made a decent postseason run but a 5-5 record in their last 10 and losses in their last two games of the year (against the lowly Braves) saw them fall just short of a postseason berth. Detroit was just an average team the last third of the season – just 29-27 in their last 56 games.

12. St. Louis Cardinals (86-76)
Two Weeks Ago: 11
The Cards finished just one game out of a playoff spot thanks to a four game win streak to end the year. They failed to qualify for the postseason for the first time since 2010! Shockingly this team led the Majors in home runs this year and the pitching let them down on more than a few occasions. My bet is that the Cards shore this up and they will be heard from again next year.
13. Seattle Mariners (86-76) Two Weeks Ago: 9
14. New York Yankees (84-78) Two Weeks Ago: 15
15. Houston Astros (84-78) Two Weeks Ago: 13
16. Kansas City Royals (81-81) Two Weeks Ago: 19
17. Pittsburgh Pirates (78-83) Two Weeks Ago: 17
18. Chicago White Sox (78-84) Two Weeks Ago: 20
19. Miami Marlins (79-82) Two Weeks Ago: 16
20. Los Angeles Angels (74-88) Two Weeks Ago: 22
21. Colorado Rockies (75-87) Two Weeks Ago: 18
22. Milwaukee Brewers (73-89) Two Weeks Ago: 21
23. Arizona Diamondbacks (69-93) Two Weeks Ago: 27
24. Philadelphia Phillies (71-91) Two Weeks Ago: 26
25. Atlanta Braves (68-93) Two Weeks Ago: 29
26. San Diego Padres (68-94) Two Weeks Ago: 28
27. Oakland Athletics (69-93) Two Weeks Ago: 23
28. Cincinnati Reds (68-94) Two Weeks Ago: 24
29. Tampa Bay Rays (68-94) Two Weeks Ago: 25
30. Minnesota Twins (59-103) Two Weeks Ago: 30
