Let’s take a look in Ray Monohan’s Week 8 NFL Power Rankings.
1. Philadelphia Eagles (6-1)
– Last Week: 3
The Eagles move into the top spot after a convincing victory in prime time on Monday Night Football over the rival Redskins.
The offense is grabbing all the headlines, and that groups certainly deserves a lot of the credit, with Carson Wentz showing the kind of second-year development we’ve seen from star quarterbacks in the past, but the defense close to joining the elite ranks.
Many people forget that while Chip Kelly was pillaging the team’s offense, he was moving a lot of that salary into the defense, and that group quietly got very talented.
2. New England Patriots (5-2)
– Last Week: 2
The Patriots looked like the Patriots on Sunday night. A lot of that result hangs with the Falcons, who made a ton of bone-headed mistakes, but New England appears to have really gotten back on track.

With so much time playing from behind this season, it was good to be reminded how dominant this team can be when they hold a lead.
3. Kansas City Chiefs (5-2)
– Last Week: 1
Back-to-back losses are surely cause for concern for fair-weather fans that jumped onto the team’s bandwagon after a 5-0 start. Particularly given the team’s track record of falling apart in big games. But this still feels like a different Chiefs squad. If they can keep the throttle down on offense, they should be just fine.
4. Seattle Seahawks (4-2)
– Last Week: 4
Dominating the Giants’ offense isn’t a worldly feat these days, but it was nice to see the Seahawks’ defense go on the road and really shut down an opponent. With the offensive line woes still clearly an issue, that’s the side of the ball that’s going to carry this team.
5. Pittsburgh Steelers (5-2)
– Last Week: 5
There are few teams that find a way to bring the best out of the Steelers time and time again like the Bengals.

What’s really been a surprise with this Pittsburgh team is how well the defense has played, finally taking that big step forward we’ve been expecting to come for years.
6. Minnesota Vikings (5-2)
– Last Week: 9
The biggest benefactor of the Aaron Rodgers injury, the Vikings are in position to run away with the NFC North, having only the 3-3 Lions in their path.
They’re going to have to solidify their quarterback play somehow, but the ground game’s working, and the defense is outstanding.
7. Dallas Cowboys (3-3)
– Last Week: 11
The Cowboys needed a convincing victory like that one to get everyone feeling right again. The Ezekiel Elliott suspension continues to loom over them, but they’re getting the most out of their star back while they can.
8. New Orleans Saints (4-2)
– Last Week: 13
At the start of the season it looked like the Saints’ defense was going to be a hot mess, but it’s that group that’s actually come together and been the difference-maker for this team in recent weeks. And the running game has taken a big step forward since Adrian Peterson left and a bigger load was given to Mark Ingram.
9. Detroit Lions (3-3)
– Last Week: 10
In a season that’s been full of upsets, bye weeks have been a welcome safe haven for some of the top teams. This week’s benefactor: The Detroit Lions.
Detroit is another team that saw their window open with the injury to Aaron Rodgers. They’ll need to step on the gas in a hurry if they hope to catch the Vikings.
10. Carolina Panthers (4-3)
– Last Week: 6
It’s getting tough to figure out which version of the Panthers will show up on a week-to-week basis. This is a team that thoroughly outplayed the Patriots, yet couldn’t muster more than three points in a loss to a Bears team that attempted all of seven passes.
