Here’s a look at 10 teams worthy of closer consideration when putting money down on NHL futures.
Let’s break it down.
2018 Stanley Cup Futures Betting Odds
Tampa Bay Lightning +500
Steve Yzerman deserves a ton of recognition for what he’s done in Tampa. This franchise has been a laughing stock in past years, and he’s turned them into a perennial contender, with no end in sight.
After playing under Ken Holland in Detroit, Yzerman was obviously taking some notes on how to build a dynasty from his former general manager, as the cupboards and stocked with young talent, and will be for years to come.
Vegas Golden Knights +700
The Golden Knights weren’t supposed to be this good this quickly. They built their roster almost exclusively from players other teams didn’t want.

But there’s definitely some magic in the air in Sin City. General manager George McPhee certainly knew what he was doing in the expansion draft, as the Golden Knights are humming along as one of the top teams in the league in their inaugural year.
Toronto Maple Leafs +1000
There are a ton of young stars in the making in Toronto, but when the Leafs signed Patrick Marleau in the offseason, it wasn’t because they had the future in mind. This is a team that’s ready to win now. Come playoff time, no one wants to draw the Buds.
Nashville Predators +1200
The Predators so enjoyed making the Stanley Cup Final a year ago that they pushed their chips to the middle of the table in an effort to get back there this season.

The Kyle Turris trade is a sign that the Predators fully have an eye on a return trip to the Final, and they’ll no doubt be searching for a different outcome when they get there.
Dallas Stars +1600
Everyone knows the Stars have a bevy of offensive weapons at their disposal. Their issues in recent years have come at the other end of the ice. But this season, Ben Bishop’s helped solidify that for the Stars.
Pittsburgh Penguins +1600
Pittsburgh’s spot in the standings isn’t flattering, but this is an elite club with a proven pedigree that can get back into the playoff picture within a week or two. Now might be the time to buy low.
Winnipeg Jets +1800
The Jets have had some elite players on the roster for a few years now. It just hasn’t all come together for them. But this season, the team’s on a roll, spending time atop the Central Division.
Chicago Blackhawks +2500
Things are bleak in Chicago – there’s just no sugar coating it. But this is a team we’ve seen go on runs, and their Cup-winning core remains largely intact. As ugly as things have been in the regular season, this is still a team no one in the West wants to draw in the playoffs.
Edmonton Oilers +4000
The Oilers are just a year removed from making the West final, and have the best young talent in all of hockey. They’re a team to watch in the second half, because if they figure things out, they can be a real terror down the stretch.
Montreal Canadiens +5000
If you’re looking for a dart throw with some upside, the Canadiens have shown they can be the No. 1 team in the East with a roster very similar to the one they’re currently putting on the ice, and head coach Claude Julien’s no stranger to making big runs once the calendar flips over. A healthy Carey Price is key.
