While rosters will change significantly in the coming months between the draft and free agency, not to mention the added wrinkle of the Las Vegas expansion team, now is the time that bettors with the foresight to wade through this time can find the best value.
Here’s a look at three favorites, three teams from the middle of the pack, and three longshots worthy of your attention on the NHL futures board.
2018 NHL Futures Betting Odds: Penguins +850
The Penguins will enter this season coming off back-to-back Cup wins, and it’s difficult to imagine they won’t be in the hunt again given they’ll be able to protect the core group that got them there.
[dfads params=’groups=234&limit=1&return_javascript=1′]
However, there’ll be a target on their backs all season long, and there just isn’t a lot of value in a team that’s played a lot of hockey the past two seasons.
2018 NHL Futures Betting Odds: Oilers +1000
An investment in the Oilers would be an investment in Connor McDavid, plain and simple. With that said, there is no player in the NHL at the moment more worthy of such an investment.
Last year’s surprise run into the postseason will likely motivate the front office to add some talent to a roster that could use some depth, making them a more dangerous opponent come playoff time.
2018 NHL Futures Betting Odds: Blackhawks +1200
For as long as the Blackhawks roster Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane, they’ll be a force in the Western Conference.
They entered the playoffs as the favorites to represent the West in Cup Final this past year, and they’ll likely be in the same situation come the 2018 postseason.
The play: Blackhawks +1200
2018 NHL Futures Betting Odds: Stars +1500
The Stars should be one of the best values on the board after a dismal season saw them fail to even qualify for the playoffs, but oddsmakers are on to them, and they’re priced fairly all things considered.
[dfads params=’groups=226&limit=1&return_javascript=1′]
Tough to pay a premium for that after their showing last season.
2018 NHL Futures Betting Odds: Predators +1500
The Predators may not have won the Cup this past season, but they were the best team for much of the playoffs.
With the exception of their goaltender, much of the talent they rely on is young and improving, so it isn’t far fetched to expect to see a return to the Cup Final from this group.
2018 NHL Futures Betting Odds: Maple Leafs +1500
There’s one of two ways this season’s going to go for the Leafs.
All of the rookies they were ultra-reliant on endured sophomore slumps and they finish outside the playoff race looking in, or that group continues to develop in the right direction, the front office supplements that group with some veteran talent and they make a run deep into the playoffs.
The play: Predators +1500
2018 NHL Futures Betting Odds: Bruins +3500
The Bruins were a dark horse to win the East this past year after a solid run towards the postseason.
They have a lot of solid pieces on their roster, and Tuukka Rask is capable of stealing a game for them at any time.
2018 NHL Futures Betting Odds: Jets +4500
The Jets have a good collection of young talent, and it’s just a matter of time before that group clicks together and they go on a run similar to what we saw from the Oilers and Leafs this past year.
If the front office can supplement that group with a quality free agent or two, the Jets will be climbing the standings in a hurry.
2018 NHL Futures Betting Odds: Vegas Golden Knights +20000
Bettors with the guts to back the NHL’s latest expansion team will be handsomely rewarded with a payout double that of any other team.
[dfads params=’groups=235&limit=1&return_javascript=1′]
As the lone expansion team and with a solid general manager in George McPhee, the Knights have a chance to make some noise in their first season, and could be better than a lot of people think.
Keep an eye out for the protected lists when they’re released later this month – the Knights are going to have some good players made available to them.
The play: Bruins +3500
Here’s a look at the remaining teams’ 2018 NHL Futures Betting Odds in their entirety:
- Tampa Bay Lightning +1000
- Washington Capitals +1000
- Anaheim Ducks +1500
