Here’s a look at 10 teams worthy of closer consideration when putting money down on NHL futures.
Let’s break it down.
2017 Stanley Cup Futures Betting Odds
Pittsburgh Penguins +800
The Penguins are coming off back-to-back Stanley Cup wins, so don’t expect to find any value in this club as they search for a three-peat.
The core of Crosby, Malkin, and Kessel remains intact, and most of the other key pieces remain in place. Losing former No. 1 overall pick Marc-Andre Fleury doesn’t sting as Matt Murray’s been a major upgrade between the pipes.
Edmonton Oilers +850
With one of the game’s true rising stars in Connor McDavid, the Oilers possess the key to turning their fortunes around.

They were just a few bounces from making the Western Conference Final a year ago. With Leon Draisaitl and McDavid locked up long term, the future is bright in Edmonton.
Tampa Bay Lightning +1000
Injuries to Steven Stamkos seem to be the No. 1 topic of discussion when it comes to the Lightning, but that’s only distracted from the terrific work general manager Steve Yzerman has done in assembling arguably the NHL’s deepest roster.
The flaws are few and far between on this team, and as the young core continues to develop and grow together, if Stamkos can remain in the fold come playoff time, few clubs will be as tough an out as Tampa.
Chicago Blackhawks +1200
The Blackhawks’ roster is a bit of a mess, and last season’s first round playoff exit was an embarrassment.
[dfads params=’groups=226&limit=1&return_javascript=1′]
But as long as the core group that’s already won three Cups remains in town, the Blackhawks will continue to be in the hunt for another.
Dallas Stars +1300
Last season was a throwaway for the Stars, who looked like a true Cup contender the year prior.
There’s a lot of scoring punch up and down this roster, including two of the most impactful point producers in the game today. If they can sort out their issues on the back end, watch out.
Nashville Predators +1400
The Predators made it all the way to the Cup Final a year ago, and were close to forcing a Game 7 against the Penguins.
The loss of James Neal in the expansion draft will hurt, and Pekka Rinne turns 35 in November, but there remains a lot of talent on this roster, and they’ve clearly bought into what Peter Laviolette is selling.
Toronto Maple Leafs +1400
The Leafs took a major step forward last season behind some young phenoms, and the front office rewarded those players with some supplementary talent through free agency.
Give the team’s reliance on rookies a year ago, a sophomore slump could hold them back, but this feels like a franchise trending up.
Montreal Canadiens +1600
It feels like it’s just a matter of time before Carey Price has a truly transcendent playoffs and carries the Canadiens to a Cup, like we’ve seen from this franchise countless times.
There are plenty of veteran pieces around him. This could be the year. In any event, good value offered on a team that’s not quite as downtrodden as many seem to think.
Ottawa Senators +3000
The Senators seem to be perennial overachievers, last season qualifying for the Eastern Conference Final after a playoff spot was in question for much of the year.
Losing Erik Karlsson for an unknown length of time hurts, but he’ll be back when the games really count.
Buffalo Sabres +5000
The Sabres have had their eyes on the future for a while now, and they may now be ready to start looking at the present.
All of those young pieces the front office has assembled look to be fitting together nicely, and adding Phil Housley behind the bench could be what the team needs to take the next step.
