Patriots vs. Rams Preview – Superbowl 53 Preview
Aside from three clunkers in the regular season, the Patriots offense has been one of the best in the NFL.
As is usually the case, the Patriots are peaking at the right time. The offense has rounded into a well-rounded attack on the ground and in the air.

Sony Michel as gotten a heavy dose of carries in the postseason and he has responded with over 100 yards rushing and multiple touchdowns.
While Tom Brady didn’t have a good game against the Chiefs and was an offside away from throwing three interceptions including the game ending interception.
The point being that Brady can never be underestimated.

He has a strong offensive line protecting him and while his skills have diminished, having the offensive line has been a huge boon to Brady and this offense as a whole.

Patriots vs. Rams Handicapping – Superbowl 53 Preview
For all the talent the Rams have on the defensive side of the ball, they under performed this year as a unit. However, when it’s come to crunch time the defense has stepped up in the postseason.
They shut down Zeke Elliott and the Cowboys running game at home and they went on the road and held their on in the dome against the high flying New Orleans Saints.
The Rams defense kept them in the game and eventually win in overtime. The Saints had five red zone trips, but they only scored a touchdown in two of those opportunities. Without that effort the Rams wouldn’t be here in Atlanta.
The key in this one – as is usually the case – the Rams will have to pressure Tom Brady and make him uncomfortable. The pressure will be on Donald, Suh, Fowler, and Michael Brockers.
If the Rams can continue to put heat on Brady without blitzing much then they should be made in the shade. The Rams have a massive advantage on the outside with Talib and Peters.

Talib is an elite shutdown corner and while Peters is prone to giving up massive plays over the top, the Patriots don’t have anybody that can take the top off and Brady doesn’t exactly have the strongest arm down the field.
Also, of course, the Patriots aren’t a one trick pony; they can actually run the ball this year, but if the Rams do what they did against the Cowboys and Saints then that will force the Patriots to be one dimensional which will, obviously, help their pass rush if they don’t fear the run game.
Patriots vs. Rams Handicapping – Superbowl 53 Preview
Overall, this is a pretty good matchup for both sides. The Patriots offense and the Rams defense have both been peaking at the right time. If I had to give an edge to one side of the ball, I would give the nod to the Rams defense.
I believe their defense will shut down the Patriots wide receivers and the Patriots will have to rely on the their halfbacks to move down the field. James White will have to be busy catching passes in this one and we’ll see if Michel can keep up his pace or if the Rams shut him down, as well.
