Rams vs. Patriots Preview – Super Bowl 53 Outlook
Statistically, the Rams rated out as the second best offense in terms of scoring and total yards. The Rams clearly were one of the best offenses in the league, but since December rolled around they lost a bit of their swag.
They only scored six points in the cold of Soldier Field and the Eagles stifled them for the most part of their game against the Eagles at home. They bounced back against the Cardinals and 49ers, but whatever. Those are the two worse teams in the league.
Against the Cowboys is when they looked like themselves, again. They were highly potent scoring on six of their eight possessions in that one. It looked like maybe the Rams could keep that momentum going, but the Saints kept them in check for the most part.
One key point to watch is how healthy will Todd Gurley be and how effective C.J. Anderson will be. Who would have thought that C.J. Anderson would be a major story line in the Super Bowl? Well, nobody, obviously.
The Rams will have to get things going on the ground to set up their play action passing game. If they can do that they will be very hard to handle for the Patriots.

Rams vs. Patriots Handicapping – Super Bowl 53 Outlook
While the Patriots offense may be peaking at the right time, the Patriots defense on the other hand has been pretty pedestrian for the entire season.
Sure, they are top ten in terms of points allowed, but when you play the Bills, Dolphins, and Jets for six of your eight games; you’re going to be able to pad the statistics a little bit.
Their defense has yet to put up a complete performance against a top tier offense. The Patriots had a couple of cracks at the Chiefs and they couldn’t stop them in either match up.
The problem for the Patriots is they struggle to generate pressure. Flowers was their top sack leader with seven and a half sacks. It puts pressure on their secondary which is actually pretty talented.
On paper, they have one of the better secondaries in the league, it just hasn’t worked out for them. Again, they just don’t generate enough pressure and that will be a problem against the Rams who have a strong offensive line.
Rams vs. Patriots Handicapping – Super Bowl 53 Matchup Preview
Overall, the edge here is obviously the Rams offense. Whether or not Gurley is healthy is somewhat irrelevant as Sean McVay is able to put his players in positions to succeed. He was able to take Anderson and make him thrive in his system.
If the Patriots don’t generate pressure then the Rams should be able to do whatever they want against the Patriots.
