Fresh off the canning of head coach Ken Hitchcock, the St. Louis Blues look to keep their playoff hopes alive when they host the Pittsburgh Penguins in this Saturday evening matchup.
Pittsburgh Penguins
The Pens are one of the best teams in the NHL despite being the third-best team in their own division. Pittsburgh has the misfortune of sharing a division with the Washington Capitals and Columbus Blue Jackets, but that hasn’t prevented them from playing great hockey.

The Pens’ offense, which ranks 1st in the NHL with 3.55 goals per game, is led by the phenomenal forwards Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin.
Sid the Kid and Geno have combined for 110 points this year, the most of any two teammates in the league.
Pittsburgh’s defense, however, has been a liability. Marc-Andre Fleury, despite his 13-7-4 record, has a GAA of 3.23 and a save percentage barely above .900.
It’s obvious that Matt Murray is the Penguins’ goalie of the future, and he’ll be in good hands if the offense can continue to score at the rate it’s been scoring.
St. Louis Blues
The Blues are looking for a second-half spark after parting ways with Ken Hitchcock on Wednesday. As it stands, St. Louis is tied with Calgary for the Western Conference’s final playoff spot.
Despite an offense that ranks 11th in goals, the Blues have been plagued with some of the worst goaltending in the NHL. With Brian Elliott’s departure for Calgary, the Blues were counting on Jake Allen to be the goaltender of the future.
Unfortunately, those plans have gone south as Allen possesses a GAA of 2.86 and a save percentage under .900. Backup netminder Carter Hutton hasn’t fared any better as his numbers are nearly identical to Allen’s.

The Blues have leaned heavily on their goaltending during the last few seasons while the offense flirted with mediocrity, but the roles have been reversed this season.
Vladimir Tarasenko’s 50 points is one of the tops among all NHL forwards, and he’s the main reason why St. Louis is fighting for that last playoff spot.
NHL Betting Trends:
- Penguins are 2-4 in their last 6 road games.
- Penguins are 4-5 in back-to-back games.
- Penguins are 8-4-3 vs. the Western Conference.
- Blues are 17-8-4 at home.
- Blues are 2-5 in their last 7 games.
Free Pittsburgh Penguins vs. St. Louis Blues NHL Hockey Prediction:
Regardless of who wins this game, it’s almost a certainty that plenty of goals will be scored. The Pens have the NHL’s best offense and the Blues aren’t bad themselves.
4* Free NHL Betting Pick: OVER 5.5 goals
The goaltending on both sides has also been suspect, so I’m looking at playing OVER the total in this game.
