There’s a lot of hardware shared between Thursday’s opponents as the Pens and Blackhawks have won four of the last five Stanley Cups.
This is Chicago’s opening game, while the Pens are coming into the back half of back to back games to kick off their season.
Pittsburgh Penguins:
The two-time reigning Stanley Cup champs are mostly intact from a year ago, with a few minor tweaks.
Out is Ron Hainsey, and in is Matt Hunwick on the blue line. Up front, long-serving Penguin Chris Kunitz has departed, but this only opens the door for youngsters like 2017 playoff hero Jake Guentzel and the man who figures to skate alongside Sidney Crosby, Conor Sheary.

Marc Andre Fleury has also left town, but that was always in the cards as young netminder Matt Murray carried the bulk of the workload in both of the Penguins back to back Stanley Cup wins.
There’s some good youth ready to emerge with this team, but as always, the established stars like Crosby, Malkin, Phil Kessel, and Kris Letang are going to have to be big contributors for this team.
Chicago Blackhawks
Chicago is in a similar spot as the Penguins, as they are still a top tier team with some elite talent, but their window may be closing as that talent gets later into their career.
Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane are no longer young bucks in this league and Chicago will be hoping that the likes of Nick Schmaltz, Alex De Brincat and Ryan Hartman are ready to take the next step and be cornerstones in this offence.

Corey Crawford is another year older in goal (32), as are Duncan Keith (34) and Brent Seabrook (32) on the blue line.
If the Blackhawks are steady defensively they’ll once again be in the mix, but their defensive depth is a concern as the drop-off after the top two is steep.
NHL Betting Trends:
- Might be tough to believe, but Chicago is 0-8 in their last eight games
- UNDER is 9-2 in their last 11 meetings in Chicago
- Pittsburgh are 23-9 in their last 32 Thursday night games
- Chicago has won the last four meetings between the two
- Pittsburgh has not scored more than two goals against Chicago in the last two seasons
- Chicago outscored Pittsburgh 9-2 last year
Free Pittsburgh Penguins vs. Chicago Blackhawks NHL Prediction:
Pittsburgh coming off a home opener and travel, and going into Chicago to play a tough team is a recipe for trouble. I think the Blackhawks take care of business in this one.
