Accuracy with the driver is also a stat I will be keeping an eye on – hitting the fairways is notoriously tough here.
If that’s not bad enough, the GIR stats are among the lowest the best in the world will face year-in and year-out meaning that a terrific all-around game is critical this week.
Unfortunately Rory McIlroy, Henrik Stenson, Danny Willett and Sergio Garcia will be taking the week off making this WGC a little more wide-open than in year’s past.
With that in mind who should we be keeping our eye on this week?
Let’s take a look.
2016 Bridgestone Invitational Favorites:
Jason Day +550
World No. 1 has finished top 25 in nine of his last 10 events played with three wins and three other top 10s over that span. He played well at the US Open (T8) but as handcuffed after a brutal first round.
Still, despite a spotty record here – including a tie for fourth in 2011 and a tie for 12th last year he figures to be in the mix this week. He’s #1 on TOUR in strokes gained: putting and is your obvious favorite here.
Dustin Johnson +700
Reigning US Open champ has to be brimming with confidence and should be good to go again this week.
[dfads params=’groups=248&limit=1&return_javascript=1′]
He leads the PGA Tour in scoring average and ranks second in driving distance – perfect for Firestone and now has seven top 10s in his last 10 starts. His best finish here is a T15 – shocking considering the strength of his game.
DJ is a weekly threat and should be in for another good week for sure.
Jordan Spieth +900
Not sure what to make of Spieth – just one top 10 in his last five starts, that being a win at the Dean & DeLuca Invitational.
He has played this event six times and hasn’t been worse than T17 and he was T10 last year so there is some hope for the real Spieth to show up this week.
2016 PGA Bridgestone Invitational Contenders:
Brooks Koepka +1800
Has been very good lately – he posted a pair of runner-up finishes, along with a tie for 13th at the U.S. Open, in his last three starts and had a T6 here last year – he was under par in every round in his only appearance on this track.
His strength is distance off the tee which should serve him well this week – gotta love Brooks this week.
Adam Scott +2200
2011 champ has been battling to find his early season form but has shown signs lately – top 20s in three of his last four starts, including the Players Championship and U.S. Open.
[dfads params=’groups=247&limit=1&return_javascript=1′]
He has recorded four top 10s at Firestone including the win and a T8 in 2014 and is tops on TOUR in strokes gained: tee-to-green – don’t be surprised to see him on the leaderboard this week.
Branden Grace +2500
Has posted three top 10s in his last four starts including a win in the RBC Heritage and a T5 at the U.S. Open. He has a terrific all-around game and has a pair of top 25s in this event in four tries.
Grace has become a weekly fixture on the PGA TOUR and could be a serious factor this week.
Jim Furyk +3000
Has proven that he’s all the way back from injury – a T2 at Oakmont and a T21 at Congressional are further proof.
He has nine top 10s here including a T3 last year – present form and track history has him firmly on my radar this week.
Shane Lowry +3500
Defending champ had a four-shot lead through 54 holes at the U.S. Open before collapsing on Sunday en route to a T2. Lowry outside of one bad round could have been your #1 option this week – still not bad at +3500.
2016 PGA Bridgestone Invitational Sleepers (+5000 or higher):
Bill Haas +6000
Enters off a T3 at Congressional and has three top 25 finishes in his last four starts at Firestone. He loves this track and arrives in the best form we’ve seen in some time.
Kevin Na +8000
Na is a bit off the radar this week – surprising considering her was seventh at the US Open. He finished T15 here last year and should be brimming with confidence this week.
He is 23rd in adjusted scoring on TOUR and could provide a nice payday this week.
2016 PGA Bridgestone Invitational Picks:
The pick this week is Brooks Koepka at +1800. This bomber should be able to shorten this lengthy track with his driver and his putter has been decent lately as well.
He was the only guy to be under par in every round last year on this track plus his current form makes him hard to ignore.
My sleeper is Kevin Na at +8000. His game is well suited for this track and he has finished top 25s in his last two starts here.
He’s also been playing very well as of late – a seventh at the US Open has him in my crosshairs this week.
