2017 PGA RBC Canadian Open Preview and Picks
Ready to bet on this week’s 2017 RBC Canadian Open betting odds? The PGA Pros land back in North America this week after a typically scintillating British Open. A typically watered-down field will take to the familiar surroundings of Glen Abbey – a par 72, 7.252 yard track that traditionally hasn’t favored any style of game – long hitters have had success here as have those that rely on iron play and their short game.

- Where: Glen Abbey GC, Ontario, Canada
- Format: 72 holes – Stroke Play
- Purse: $6,000,000

Accuracy and shot placement is probably the most important attribute for those teeing it up this week – where players put the ball off the tee and their approach to the greens will be critical.
Not shockingly stats that I looked at are Strokes Gained: Off-The Tee, Par 5 Birdies or Better, Strokes Gained: Around-The-Green and Par 4 Efficiency 400-450 Yards.
While not the easiest track the pros will face, the winner here is expected to go low this week – Glen Abbey will be a picnic compare to the conditions of last week.

With all of that in mind who should we be keeping an extra eye on this week? Let’s break it down.
2017 Canadian Open Favorites:
Dustin Johnson +700
Despite not being at his best, there is ZERO doubting who the best player in the field is this week – DJ off at T54 at Royal Birkdale has had some success here – runner-up finishes in his last two appearances in 2013 and 2016 have him firmly on the radar this week.
Simply put discounting the World #1 would be insane – especially since Mr. Spieth is threatening to knock him off his perch!
Matt Kuchar +1100
Nobody would fault Kuch fs exhaustion gets the best of him this week but his recent consistency makes him an obvious threat this week. Off an impressive second place finish at The Open, Kuchar arrives on a track he has posted three straight top 10s in – a T2-T7-T9 run at Glen Abbey.
He now has six top 10s worldwide this year – two straight ahead of this weekend including a T4 in Scotland and a second last week. Kuch is the hottest player in the world right now and if he can get past the fatigue-factor he could get that elusive first win of 2017.
2017 Canadian Open Contenders:
Charley Hoffman +2200
Hoffman has been consistently good this year – the only thing missing is a win! He has four top 10s in 2017 and enters off a respectable T20 at the British Open and has finished inside the top 20 in his last two trips to Glen Abbey – a T16 in 2013 and a T7 in 2015.
Hoffman has been a factor every time out and has the game that seems to fit what Glen Abbey will throw at him.
Bubba Watson +2800
In a watered-down field Watson gets a nod despite having what has been a miserable year by his standards. He enters off a decent T27 at The Open however and gets a crack at a course he finished second in 2015.
He’s definitely a bomber with some touch which is what is essential here.
Jim Furyk +3300
Has been up and down this season but seems to be trending in the right direction ahead of this weekend – three straight made cuts including a slightly underwhelming T35 at last week’s Barbasol.
He has won this event twice (2006 and 2007) but neither was held at Glen Abbey although he did post a 13th on this track in 2016, a fourth in 2015 and a T9 in 2014. His game is accuracy which should suit him well this week. Going with a little track history here.
Ian Poulter +4000
Ho about Mr. Poulter as of late? He has made eight straight cuts ahead of this week including a T2 at THE PLAYERS, at T9 at the Scottish and a T14 at The Open.
His ball-striking has been the difference lately he is second on TOUR in strokes gained: around the green and sixth in strokes gained: tee to green – if his putter shows up he will provide a nice payday!
2017 Canadian Open Sleepers (+5000 or higher):
Graham DeLaet +5000
How about a little Canadian content? Graham DeLaet still has yet to post a win on TOUR and has struggled on home turf – a T7 (at Glen Abbey) in 2014 was his best result – a T46 was his second-best.
[dfads params=’groups=247&limit=1&return_javascript=1′]
He’s still one of the better ball-strikers on TOUR – he’s 22nd in strokes gained: off the tee, 23rd in strokes gained: approaching the green and is 25th in putting. Recent results show he’s knocking on the door – a T10 at Memorial and a T6 at the Heritage.
Adam Hadwin +7000
How about another Canadian? He, unlike DeLaet has been good in his country’s event – a T37 in 2010, a T4 in 2011 and a T7 at Glen Abbey in 2015.
He won the Valspar earlier this year which shows he can close the deal and he did shoot a 59 at the Career Builder this year – he is indeed a talent!
If he can give his incredible putter a chance, Hadwin could realistically be in the mix this week.
Jhonattan Vegas +12500
The defending champ at +12500? It’s true – thanks to an underwhelming stretch – five straight missed cuts ahead of this week including the British Open last week. Vegas, when on, has a very good all-around game – a T4 at the Honda earlier this year proves that he hasn’t completely fallen off a cliff.
That said he is awfully tough to support despite being worthy of mention.
2017 Canadian Open Picks:
It’s pretty hard to ignore Dustin Johnson and Matt Kuchar but I am. My pick this week is a value one – Ian Poulter at +4000 gets my nod. He has been very good lately and is deserving of a win.
My sleeper is a Canadian!! Go figure!
Adam Hadwin at +7000, already a winner on TOUR, has been a serious threat on TOUR and he has had some success in his country’s National Open.
