Because of the redesign there isn’t a whole lot known about this course – length wouldn’t seem to be a factor here.
Accuracy however does appear to be important – those who miss the fairway with their drives will be forced to rely on strong iron play out of some substantial rough.
Par 4 scoring average, stroked gained: approach, strokes gained: Around-the-green and scrambling stats are all stats that I focussed on this week to make my pick.
So, with all of that in mind who should we keep a special eye on this week? Let’s break it down.
2017 Quicken Loans National Favorites:
Rickie Fowler +750
The biggest name in the tournament, Fowler is enjoying his best, most consistent year on TOUR.
He had six top 25s in nine starts (three top 5s), he leads the TOUR in adjusted scoring, ranks 19th in driving accuracy, 32nd in greens in regulation, and seventh in strokes gained: putting – seemingly perfect for this track.

Ricky was last seen finishing what was a slightly disappointing T5 at the US Open – a result he will be eager to avenge this week on a course that would seem to suit him very well.
Justin Thomas +1100
Outside of Ricky, Justin Thomas has been arguably the most consistent guy in the field (minus three missed cuts during the spring) – three wins, a top-ten finish at the Safeway Open and a T23 at the WGC-HSBC Champions.
He currently leads the TOUR in birdies-or-better percentage and ranks 22nd in proximity to the hole on approach which should help this week.
Thomas is a guy that has learned how to win and is a weekly threat until further notice.
Patrick Reed +1200
Reed has certainly been up-and-down this season but has arisen from a streak of three missed cuts in April. He has finished inside the top 25 in six of his last seven starts overall included a T13 at the US Open and a T5 last week at the Travelers.
His driving distance and accuracy are back and his putting stroke has re-emerged – Reed is peaking and as a streaky guy absolutely has to be on the radar this week.
2017 Quicken Loans National Contenders:
Marc Leishman +2000
Has kept busy – that’s for sure!
He has played six of the last seven weeks and has finished inside the top 25 in three of his last five overall. He currently ranks sixth on TOUR in adjusted scoring average and 10th in stroked gained: tee-to-green – he has emerged as one of the more solid all-around guys out there.
Leishman is due for a big payday – it may just come this week.
Brendan Steele +2500
Has been a top-20 machine – he has eight this season including a T14 at River Highlands and a win at the Safeway Open in October – Steele has three top 15s in his last four starts overall.
He ranks 17th in Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green, 14th in scrambling and 25th in proximity to the hole and should be able to eat up the shorter confines of TPC Potomac.
Steele has few holes in his game and generally feasts on par 4s – expect him to be in the mix as per usual this week.
Bill Haas +2800
2013 champ has been a tad inconsistent but has 10 top 25s in 16 events played this season including three top 10s and enters on a T12-T25-T5 stretch.
He currently ranks eighth on TOUR in greens-in-regulation, seventh in scrambling and third in bogey avoidance which should come in handy this week.
His touch has gone to a different level this year making Haas seemingly overdue for a big win. I’m lovin’ Haas this week – you should too!
David Lingmerth +2800
Has been coming on of late for sure – he has finished inside the top 25 in five of his last seven starts and enters off a T26 at the Travelers.
[dfads params=’groups=247&limit=1&return_javascript=1′]
He has a win on this track already – back in 2012 he captured a Web.com tournament here and has proven to be more comfortable on the shorter tracks.
With a scorching putter Lingmerth could be a sneaky play this week as one of the few with experience on this course.
2017 Quicken Loans National Sleepers (+5000 or higher):
Jimmy Walker +5000
Somehow the talented Texan has just one top 10 finish so far this season but has shown form in this event in the past albeit on different courses.
A T18 at the Masters and a T13 at the Valero Texas Open have proven that Walker may be down but he’s not out – something tells me he is in for a big week!
Kevin Streelman +5000
The world’s #139 ranked player has been inconsistent this season but has shown form at times. Highlighted by a top 5 at Mayakoba, Streelman has been trending upward ahead of this week including a T18 at the Dean & Deluca Invitational and a T13 at Memorial.
He enters off a top 10 at the Travelers in which he sizzled on Sunday as well. Although Streelman has failed to impress most of the year he seems to be in season-best form and could surprise this week.
2017 Quicken Loans National Picks:
The pick this week is Justin Thomas at +1100. He is on the cusp of elite status – no reason he doesn’t reign against this watered-down field.
The Sleeper is Kevin Streelman at +5000. His current form is impressive at the moment and his game seems to suit this track to a tee.
