Obviously, length off the tee won’t be the biggest factor this week – TPC Southwind is a second-shot course where approaches will be the determining factor. With a plethora of water lining the course, narrow fairways and small greens, accuracy will be at a premium this week.
Ball strikers will still have an advantage but stats like strokes gained-approach, par 4 scoring and GIR will also be key to success.
So, who should we keep an extra eye on this week? Let’s take a peek.
2017 FedEx St. Jude Classic Favorites:
Rickie Fowler +800
Fowler has had arguably his most consistent year so far on TOUR – 10 starts with seven top 20s including a win at the Honda, a T3 at the Shell Houston Open and other top results at the Masters and in Mexico.
He enters off a very good T2 at Muirfield Village and now leads the TOUR in strokes gained: tee-to-green.
He’s also second in adjusted scoring, seventh on the PGA TOUR in strokes gained: approach-the-green and ninth in strokes gained: putting – perfect for this track.
He finished T13 in his only starts on this course in 2014 and is the favorite this week in a slightly watered-down field.
Adam Scott +1200
Didn’t play all that well at the Memorial last week but he does have five top 15 finishes in just nine starts this year including top 10s at Masters and THE PLAYERS.
He held the 54-hole lead in this event the only time he played it back in 2007 before melting down on Sunday and finishing seventh but he should be good to go in the average field this week.
His tee-to-green game is typically solid and if he can get a few putts to drop Scoot could be the last man standing Sunday.
Brooks Koepka +1200
How’s this for track history? Koepka has recorded a T19, T3 and T2 in his last three starts here with a scoring average of just over 68 in those starts.
He has finished inside the top 20 in four of his last six starts on TOUR including a T11 at The Masters and a solo second at the Valero Texas Open.
He did finish T31 at the Memorial last week but this track obviously suits his eye more than last weeks. With a strong all-around game, I expect Koepka to be in the mix again in arguably his favorite stop on TOUR.
2017 FedEx St. Jude Classic Contenders:
Phil Mickelson +1600
Phil has absolutely nothing to lose after announcing that he will sit out the US Open next week.
He has been solid on TOUR this year and has finished inside the top 3 in three of his last four appearances in this event – he finished T11 in the other year over that span – with a 67.88 scoring average in those four starts.
His putter has been its typically solid self – expect Phil to contend for his first win on TOUR since the 2013 Open Championship – hard to believe.
Francesco Molinari +1800
Has quietly been playing some very good golf – a T6 at THE PLAYERS with a solo second at the BMW PGA – he has four straight top 25s ahead of this weekend.
He arrives with some momentum and with stats like second on PGA TOUR in strokes gained: approach-the-green and seventh in adjusted scoring he should have another good week.
A premier ball striker, Molinari should easily eclipse his T34 in last year’s St. Jude – a win in a watered-down field wouldn’t be a surprise at all.
Billy Horschel +2800
Winner of the AT&T Byron Nelson this year also had a T4 at the Honda Classic. His track His track history here is impressive – three consecutive top 10s – a T10, a T6 and an eight-place finish before skipping last year’s edition.
He has been wildly inconsistent but stats like 10th in greens in regulation and 41st in adjusted scoring have him on the list this week. I like Horschel this week – just wish the price wasn’t so high.
Russell Henley +2800
Finished T7 in this event last year thanks to his sweet putting stroke and patented accuracy off the tee. He is 22nd on the PGA TOUR in greens in regulation, ninth in strokes gained: putting and 10th in adjusted scoring which should definitely help out this week.
He has had some good results this year including a win at the Shell Houston Open and a T11 at the Masters but a missed cut at the AT&T Byron Nelson last time out is at least a little reason for concern.
That said his strengths line up very well for this track – nobody would be shocked to see him win for the fourth time on TOUR.
2017 FedEx St. Jude Classic Sleepers (+5000 or higher):
Ian Poulter +5000
Last played this event in 2014 when he finished T6. He enters off a T2 at THE PLAYERS and has three straight top 40s ahead of this week.
He ranks eighth on TOUR in strokes gained: approach-the-green, 28th in adjusted scoring and will be one of the more motivated guys out there considering that a US Open berth will be on the line. Poulter saves his best for pressure moments – consider this week one of those!
Rafael Cabrera Bello +5000
Inconsistent Spaniard has two top-five finishes this year and will rely on his stellar putter this week if he wants to get it done – he is seventh on TOUR in strokes gained: putting.
He was T4 at THE PLAYERS recently and because of that has to be on the radar this week.
Stewart Cink +6600
Has certainly been quiet this year but has a chance to shine in this watered-down field. He has finished inside the top 25 in three of his last four starts including a T25 at the Memorial and a T10 at the Dean & Deluca.
Currently he ranks twelfth in strokes gained: approach-the-green which will definitely help this week.
2017 FedEx St. Jude Classic Free Pick:
I really think that Phil Mickelson is in for a big week but I am going with Brooks Koepka at +1200. I had him a couple of weeks ago but he fell flat.
Not to be discouraged, I just can’t go against a guy that has been inside the top 3 in the last two editions of this tournament.
Add in the fact that this is a watered-down field and I think this is brilliant chance for Brooks to get it done.
My sleeper is Ian Poulter at +5000. He was terrific at THE PLAYERS and he has the short game to provide a very nice payday.
