Strokes Gained: Approach the Green, Greens in Regulation, Scrambling, Birdie or Better Percentage and Strokes Gained: Putting stats seem to be the most important to focus on. A strong all-around game is essential here.
With all of that in mind who should we keep a special eye on this week? Let’s take a look.
2017 Dean & DeLuca Invitational Favorites:
Jon Rahm +1200
22 year old has taken the PGA world by storm. He makes his tournament debut this week having posted a win, a second, a T3, a fourth and a T5 in last nine starts.
The reason? A terrific all-around game. Right now he sits fourth in par breakers on TOUR, 10th in adjusted scoring average and second in strokes gained: tee-to-green.

He is the most consistent guy in the field at this moment and a legitimate favorite to bring this one home.
Jordan Spieth +1200
Spieth has been a tad quiet on TOUR – this is his major chance to break through. He has made the cut here all for times he’s played, winning in 2016 and never finishing any worse than tied for 14th with a second place finish in 2015 as well.
His actual scoring average here is 67.31. That said Spieth has actually missed the cut in three of his last four starts overall – he just isn’t on top of his game right now.
But Spieth is an elite talent that should be able to turn it on this week. It’s awfully hard to argue with his success here!
Sergio Garcia +1400
2001 camp hasn’t played here since a T13 in 2012. Garcia looks like a different man after finally capturing his first Major – this year he has nine starts and has finished inside the top 30 in all except one including the Masters breakthrough.
His stats seem to support another big week – he’s sixth on TOUR in GIR and third in strokes gained: tee-to-green which should pave the way for a good week in Texas.
2017 Dean & DeLuca Invitational Contenders:
Bud Cauley +2500
Has quietly put together a very nice season on TOUR – top 10s in four straight starts ahead of this week. He’s played well here – a T14 in 2013 and a T21 in 2014 being his best results.
Cauley’s game is tee-to-green which is essential on this track. If he can get a few puts to drop he could b a factor.
Jason Dufner +2500
Duf seems to be back to form – he has eight top 25 finishes in his last 11 starts. His track record here is pretty good as well – a second place finish, a playoff loss and a T6 in last year’s edition.
Dufner fell apart with a 74 on Sunday but still finished T13 last week and is back on the radar folks – especially o a track that seems to suit his eye.
Matt Kuchar +2500
Kuchar seem due for a special effort and it could come on a track that her has three top 10s in 10 appearances including a T6 last year and a runner-up finish in 2013.
He finished T9 at the Byron Nelson and showed good form in that start – he was tops in the field in GIR. In a slightly watered-down field I think Kuch is prime for a good week.
Adam Hadwin +3300
Canadian kid arrives in pretty good form and looking like a weekly threat on TOUR. He has made 17 straight cuts and has shown some affinity for this track in limited starts – a T5 in 2015 and a T22 in 2016.
His game has always relied on wedges and his putter which is perfect for this track – he’s 17th in strokes gained: tee-to-green on TOUR and fourth in scrambling.
Hadwin’s strengths seem to play right into Colonial’s hands – expect Hadwin’s name to be prevalent this week.
Phil Mickelson +3300
Two time champion here (2000 and 2008) makes his first appearance here since a missed cut in 2010. Phil hasn’t tasted victory on TOUR since the 2013 British Open – hard to believe!
But Phil is still one of the premier short-game players on the planet – he is still lethal with wedges in his hands.
[dfads params=’groups=247&limit=1&return_javascript=1′]
He still ranks 11th on Tour in Strokes Gained: Putting, and 24th in Strokes Gained: Around the Green and he still has three top 10s in his last 12 starts overall.
Phil can turn it on like nobody – don’t be surprised to see his name on leaderboards this week!
Zach Johnson +3300
Two-time winner and all-time earnings leader at Colonial has made the cut here all eleven times he’s teed it up with eight top 25s over that span and five top 10s.
He hasn’t been all that great this tear but that said has four top 20s in his last 11 starts. Zach knows and loves this track – I’m expecting him to contend this week.
2017 Dean & DeLuca Invitational Sleepers (+5000 or higher):
Brandt Snedeker +5000
Where have you gone Brandt? He has been nursing a sore hand but should be back to full strength by this week. He has made the cut all seven times he’s played here including a T2 in 2015 and another pair of top 20s.
I’m expecting his short game to shine and for him to have his best result in quite some time.
Charley Hoffman +5000
Hoffman’s track record here isn’t great (just three top 25s in eight starts with a T10 in 2015) but his game should suit this track. Hoffman has been good in 2017 and is great value at +5000 here.
2017 Dean & DeLuca Invitational Picks:
It’s pretty hard not to like Spieth this week but Jason Dufner at +2500 is my pick. He was in the hunt last week – he played very well except in the final round.
His good track history has me thinking Duf is in for a big week.
My sleeper is Brandt Snedeker at +5000. He’s just too good to be dismissed.
