2016 Tour Championship Handicapping
Driving Accuracy may be important than length this week – five of the last six winners in this event have finished outside the top 10 in Distance but those same guys were able to hit fairways with regularity.
Greens in Regulation and putting stats are also important to keep an eye on. Current form is something I looked at as well for my pick.
So who should we keep a special eye on this week – let’s break it down.
2016 Tour Championship Favorites:
Dustin Johnson +400
FedEx Cup points leader further bolstered his Player of the Year case with a win at the BMW Championship and looks poised to win the $10 million.
He has 15 top 20 finishes in his last 17 starts overall and has been better than any player on TOUR this year – in almost every aspect of the game.
Add in the fact that he’s had fifth place finishes at East Lake in his last two starts (2013 and 2015) with an average of 68.50 shots per round and you see why he’s the favorite here. It’s pretty hard to bet against him isn’t it?
Rory McIlroy +550
Showed some definite signs of life with a win in the Deutsch Bank but slipped to a T42 finish at the BMW Championship – inconsistency has been killing Rory – particularly his putter.
He does have two top 10 finishes on this course but he’s awfully tough to support at this price based on his current form.
Jason Day +800
Was forced from the BMW Championship with a back injury – a bit of a concern heading into this weekend.
[dfads params=’groups=248&limit=1&return_javascript=1′]
He is still one of the best putters on the planet which will definitely help and he does have three top 10s on this track with a 68.875 scoring average in his last four appearances so there is definitely some intrigue.
Day has been remarkable and can never be counted out!
2016 Tour Championship Contenders:
Adam Scott +1000
Has finished fourth in all three legs of the Playoff so far – impressive! If he wins this week the $10 million is his. As one of the premier ball strikers in the world he is worth a long hard look.
He currently leads the PGA Tour in strokes gained: approach-the-green and is tops in the FedEx Cup Playoffs in GIR. Scott has been lurking – nobody would be shocked to see him emerge this week!
Jordan Spieth +1000
Defending Champion here has had some well-documented struggles this year – but he is still Jordan Spieth. Keep in mind he had a T2 on this track in 2013. He is 11th in Playoffs in strokes gained: putting and T6 in adjusted scoring – pretty good stats heading into the week.
He will be out for redemption this week – watch out!
Paul Casey +1400
Casey, outside of Mr. Johnson may be the hottest player on TOUR heading into this week – back-to-back runner-up finishes at TPC Boston and Crooked Stick. He has posted two top 5 finishes on this track in the past including a T5 last year and a T4 in 2010 and currently sits second in GIR and first in scrambling in the Playoffs. He is hitting the ball incredibly right now and looks due for a win!
Patrick Reed +1800
Currently sits second in the FedEx Cup points standings – he could realistically be $10 million richer on Sunday. He has finished inside the top 25 in every start since July and is playing as solid in every aspect of his game as ever.
The only drawback? He has never finished inside the top 15 in his two appearances on this track. There are many that like him to snap that streak this week – I’m not one.
Matt Kuchar +3300
Enters off a T4 at the BMW Championship after a rather pedestrian start to the Playoff. He has been just OK in this event – two top 10s including one last year but enters this year’s edition with some momentum.
[dfads params=’groups=247&limit=1&return_javascript=1′]
Kuchar is a great ball striker as we all know – if he puts it all together he could offer his backers a nice payday.
2016 Tour Championship Sleepers (+5000 or higher):
Si Woo Kim +6000
It’s pretty hard to pick a sleeper in this condensed and solid field but how about the impressive 21 year old Korean? He makes his East Lake debut having finished top 20 in his last two starts after and a good win earlier this summer at Sedgefield.
He is a premier putter who could surprise this week.
Kevin Chappell +6600
Like I said, picking a sleeper is awfully tough for this event. He has three runner-up finishes on TOUR this year and has some stats that support a good week – 13th in strokes gained: tee-to-green.
But his putter will need to find a different gear in order for him to contend.
Jason Dufner +8000
How about Duf at +8000? He is a terrific ball striker and could shock the field. He plays East Lake for the first time since 2013 when he finished T9.
Nothing about his stats really jump off the page but he does sit sixth in the Playoff in GIR. Duf certainly isn’t out of place on this big stage – an interesting +8000.
2016 Tour Championship Picks:
It’s pretty hard to go against Dustin Johnson but I am. Adam Scott at +1000 is my play. He has been the most consistent player during the Playoffs and is a great fit for East Lake.
It was hard to come up with a Sleeper but here goes. Si Woo Kim at +6000 is my pick – just a hunch!
