2016 The Barclays Handicapping
Bethpage Black is a true test of a players’ all-around game. Total driving including distance, greens in regulation and a hot putter will likely determine the winner this week – steadiness seems to be the key for success here.
With that in mind who should we be keeping a special eye on this week? Let’s take a look.
2016 The Barclays Championship Favorites:
Jason Day +750
Defending champ (not on this track) will tee it up for the first time since a runner-up finish at Baltursol. He’s the World #1 for a reason – his three wins this season were tremendous to say the least.
He leads the TOUR in strokes gained: putting, he finished T24 on this track in 2012 and is a weekly threat on TOUR. Day is a stud and will be motivated for a good week.
Dustin Johnson +900
DJ, like Day will hit the course for the first time since the PGA Championship – a tournament he shockingly missed the cut in. Prior to that he had six straight top 10 finishes on TOUR including wins at the US Open and the Bridgestone Invitational.
[dfads params=’groups=248&limit=1&return_javascript=1′]
He leads the TOUR in proximity and is second in both adjusted scoring and birdies or better.
He was T3 on this track in 2013 and has a knack of getting better later in the season. Johnson was good on this track the last time this event was held here and enters this edition in terrific form.
Rory McIlroy +1000
Despite not having the ground-breaking win in 2016 Rory has been OK. He leads the TOUR in strokes gained: off-the-tee, is second in par-5 scoring and third in birdies or better – good qualities for this track.
Rory will be extra-motivated for the win this week – don’t be shocked to see him emerge.
2016 The Barclays Championship Contenders:
Henrik Stenson +1200
There’s no hotter player on the planet right now. His summer has been sizzling – two wins and a silver medal at the Olympics. He has finally won on the biggest stage with his win in the British and has arguably the best all-around game on earth right now.
Stenson looks like he can’t be slowed right now – expect him to contend this week.
Jordan Spieth +1400
Ugh – what to think! He will tee it up for the first time since Baltrusol where he finished a quiet T13. Jordan Spieth is still Jordan Spieth though – he still has two wins on TOUR this year and is fifth in FedEx Cup standings.
You can bet that Jordan used his layoff to tweak a few things – I am expecting big things this week.
Phil Mickelson +2800
Phil should be a rested guy as well and enters in some good form – six top 5 finishes this season. He is tops on TOUR in adjusted scoring and is third in strokes gained: putting but will be looking for his first win this year after three runner-up finishes.
He has been OK on this track – second place finishes at the US Opens in both 2002 and 2009 and a T38 in 2012 that was plagued by a final round 76. Phil is below the radar and is certainly overdue for a win this week.
Adam Scott +3300
Was terrific earlier this year but has finished inside the top 10 just once in his last five starts overall. That said he’s made the cut all 16 times he’s teed it up on TOUR this year and he leads the PGA TOUR in strokes gained: tee-to-green.
[dfads params=’groups=247&limit=1&return_javascript=1′]
Scott is prime for a huge bounce back this week – his strong all-around game should help him accomplish that goal for sure.
Brandt Snedeker +3300
Sneds has been quietly solid all season long and arrives off a T3 at Sedgefield – he also had a T5 at the Canadian Open last month. He finished second the last time this event was held at Bethpage Black back in 2012 and is currently tops on TOUR in par 4 scoring.
Brandt has a little work to do in order to get a Ryder Cup spot – extra motivation for a good finish this week.
2016 The Barclays Championship Sleepers (+5000 of higher):
Kevin Na +6600
Has been playing some good golf of late – a T10 at Sedgefield was his second straight top 10 overall – his 13th top 25 finish this year. He also had a top 10 in the US Open.
Na has been knocking on the door and is quietly one of the more consistent players on TOUR heading into this week. At +6600 Na is great value.
Russell Knox +6600
Speaking of value – how about Travelers Champion Russell Knox? He sits fourth in FedEx Cup standings and will be extra-motivated to throw his name in the hat for a final European Ryder Cup Team spot.
Knox ranks 11th in fairways hit on TOUR, second in GIR, T13 in proximity and eighth in bogey avoidance – great stats for this track.
2016 The Barclays Championship Picks:
The pick this week is the hottest player on the planet – Henrik Stenson at +1200. Bethpage Black is a bombers course and there is no better ball striker on the planet right now.
I think he will be a little extra motivated this week as well after losing the Gold in Rio.
My sleeper is Kevin Na at +6600. He’s been playing some great golf as of late and has the perfect all around game to contend.
