A good all-around game will be the key here – the winners here have traditionally averaged a winning score of minus 15 – just like Brooks Koepka did last year. Good ball strikers will do well here – those who can hit greens and be accurate off the tee have the advantage.
A pretty good field will tee it up this week – it should be a good weekend.
So who should we keep an eye on this week? I hit on Brandt Snedeker last week – let’s try to make it two in a row.
2016 Management Phoenix Open Favorites:
Bubba Watson 10/1
Has T2 finishes in his last two starts at this event and hasn’t been over par in his last 34 rounds on this track! He ranks third in driving distance, fifth in greens in regulation and sixth in strokes gained tee to green so far this season and has four straight top 10 finishes on TOUR. Impressive.

Brandt Snedeker 14/1
Sneds rides into town hot (how about that final round last week!!!) – an incredible win last week at the Farmers – a T3, a runner-up and that win so far on his 2016 résumé. He’s notched top 10s in three of his last five trips to TPC Scottsdale – if he can avoid a letdown Sneds should contend.
Rickie Fowler 16/1
How did Fowler follow up a terrific win in Abu Dhabi? A missed cut at Torrey Pines last week. Ugh. He is an elite guy but is pretty hard to figure out.
2016 Management Phoenix Open Contenders:
Brooks Koepka 20/1
Defending champion finished T3 at Kapalua a month ago. He also finished in the top 10 in two majors last year but like Fowler is tough to figure out. His current form is just OK – my guess is that the repeat is awfully tough to accomplish this week.

Jason Dufner 25/1
Duf is back! His playoff win at PGA WEST has him back on the radar. He also had a T9 at Waialae and has top 3 finishes three times already this season. He has been OK here – a tie for eighth in 2012 and a solo second in 2011. Duf’s love for the big stage and his recent stats suggest that it could be a big week for Jason this week.
Ryan Palmer 33/1
So far this year he has three starts, three top 20 finishes and ranks fourth on TOUR in all-around – a nice stat for this track. He finished T2 here last year and also had a solo fifth in 2013. Palmer is one of those guys who shows up on track he likes – TPC Scottsdale is one of those places.
Kevin Kisner 33/1
Believe it or not I’m going to talk about a guy that has missed the cut in all three attempts here. He has top 10s in his last four starts, including a trio of top fives. Kisner is the FedEx Cup leader for a reason – ninth in strokes gained putting and fifth in driving accuracy – perfect traits for this track.
2016 Management Phoenix Open Sleepers (50/1 or higher):
Ryan Moore 50/1
Has four top 10s at TOC Scottsdale, including a solo fourth in 2013 and a tie for sixth in 2009 and enters off a pair of ties for 10th in three starts. We haven’t seen much of Moore but chances are we do this week.
David Lingmerth 50/1
Has four consecutive top 15s – a playoff loss at the CareerBuilder Challenge should be motivation for a good week. Lingmerth enters in very good form and is decent value at 50/1.
2016 Management Phoenix Open Picks:
The pick this week isn’t the sexiest. Bubba Watson at 10/1 gets the nod. On a course that favors the long hitters and with Bubba lapping up the love that is about to come his way I just can’t resist.
The Sleeper is Ryan Moore at 50/1. Call it a hunch – Moore always shows up at this event and his current form is nothing to sneeze at.
