Instead accuracy and the ability to hit greens will likely determine the winner.
Bunkers, sand dunes cenotes (water) and thick local vegetation will greet the pros this week – water comes into play on half of the holes on this track. If you aren’t in control, you won’t score.
So with all of that in mind who should we be keeping an extra eye on this week? Let’s break it down.
2016 OHL Classic at Mayakoba Favorites:
Russel Knox +1400
Lost in a playoff here last year and enters this week in terrific form – two straight top 10s in his last two events played – he also won the Travelers in the summer. Knox brings with him a boat load of confidence into this week to a track that he’s proven her can score on.
The oddsmakers have it right – he has to be the favorite in this watered-down field.
Emiliano Grillo +1800
Consistent Argentinean will see this track for the first time this week.
The 2015-2016 Rookie of the Year has nine top 20s in his career and his stats early in this season have been impressive – 28th in strokes gained: tee-to-green, 40th in greens in regulation and 45th in driving accuracy – good traits for this track.
He has a real chance to break through this week and kick his 2016-2017 season off with a bang.
Jon Rahm +1800
Young Spaniard has been in every tournament he’s played lately – he enters one streak of five top 25s in his last six starts – two top 15s in the first two starts of his 2016-2017 campaign.
Add in the fact that he was T10 here last year and it looks like some trends are converging here. Rahm will be in the mix.
2016 OHL Classic at Mayakoba Contenders:
Chris Kirk +2500
Played poorly last week in Vegas but he did record top 10 finishes in his previous two starts. Outside of two bad rounds the last three weeks Kirk has been impressive.

Keegan Bradley +2500
Welcome back to relevance Keegan Bradley! He has finished inside the top 25 in his last three starts – top 10s in his last two including a T7 in Vegas and a sixth in Malaysia.
Bradley is in by far the best form we’ve seen in quite a long time and gets a crack at a track he finished eighth on last year. This just may be Keegan’s week to make a statement.
Harris English +2800
The 2013 Champ finished with a minus 21 score that year. He has been solid but unspectacular in 2016 – 13 straight cuts made. But may have discovered something last week when he tied for fourth in Vegas.
He’s a streaky guy who looked terrific last week – my guess is that he continues that form in Mexico.
Tony Finau +3000
Finau is going to pay us off sometime. Sundays have been his nemesis! He finished T7 here last year and played well on the weekend in that event. If Finau can put together four rounds he should be a factor.
Derek Fathauer +3300
Who? In a less-than-spectacular field we can take a shot. Fathauser has started his season with a T 15 at the Safeway Open and tie for third at the CIMB Classic. He played very well here last year before fading on Sunday.

He’s quietly top 20 on the PGA Tour in both strokes gained: putting and scoring average – might be worth a look.
2016 OHL Classic at Mayakoba Sleepers (+5000 or higher):
Johnson Wagner +5000
Former winner here in 2011 also tied for 11th in 2015 and was T8 on this track in 2015 – what’s not to like? He has finished inside the top 5 in three of his last six starts and is an intriguing +5000 this week.
Charles Howell III +6000
Howell always seems to show up at this time of the year. Last week was proof that he could be ramping up again – a T15 at the Shriners. He has finished inside the top 20 in five of his last six starts here – the best track record of anyone in the field.
Howell loves this time a year – don’t sleep on him.
2016 OHL Classic at Mayakoba Picks:
I am going with Keegan Bradley at +2500 here to get his first win in four years. On the heels of consecutive top 10s KG looks poised to snap an unfathomable skid.
My sleeper is Charles Howell III at +6000. He was good in Vegas last week and has finished inside the top 20 five times.
He saves his best for fall/winter golf – I like his chances for a quality finish this week.
