The best team in the NHL will take on the worst, in what should be a lopsided match in Denver.
The Capitals best the Avs in the standings by a ridiculous 63 points.
Washington Capitals
The Caps have a number of different areas which they grade as the best in the league, including points (106), goal differential (plus-75), goals against per game (2.1), and number of home victories (31).
The team appears to be the most complete it’s been in recent memory.
As the favorite to come out of the East, Washington has bolstered the defensive unit with the acquisition of Kevin Shattenkirk. Shattenkirk provides a potent offense one of the top powerplay quarterbacks in the league, as evidenced in his 50 points this season.
He’s tallied eight assists in his 11 games with Washington thus far.

Nicklas Backstrom continues to quietly have an excellent season, with 79 points In 74 games played to lead the Capitals.
He currently sits in 6th in the NHL scoring race and hasn’t received the kind of attention that fellow superstars atop the charts have.
Alex Ovechkin won’t be scoring 50 this year, a mark which he’s used to. That’s not to say he hasn’t been lighting the lamp, as he’s netted 30 goals in 74 games, which is solid but just not the totals we’re used to from Ovy.
Braden Holtby should be a Vezina finalist and the Jennings hunt as well, along with Phillip Grubauer. Grubauer should draw the start here against the league’s worst team, resting Holtby for the playoff run where possible.
Grubauer has been excellent this year with a .925 SV% and 2.10 GAA in his 19 appearances.
Colorado Avalanche
On the opposite end of the spectrum, Colorado sits dead last in the league in most major categories, including in both goals per game and goals against, point total, and goal differential at minus-106.
The Avalanche have solidified the best draft odds, currently sitting 24 points behind the next worst team.
What’s most surprising about the Avs is the terrible offense, consider they have the likes of Nathan MacKinnon, Matt Duchene, Gabriel Landeskog and Mikko Rantanen. Scoring an average of 2.0 goals per game, the team clearly needs a shakeup.
Jason Bednar could be a one and done behind the bench, considering the horrendous mark in his first NHL head coaching gig.
He’s been a winner at every level he’s coached, but no one can justify just how poor the Avs have performed with the type of offensive talent on the roster.

The major deal that is most likely is the trading of Matt Duchene for some defensive and future help.
Duchene only has 37 points this season, but has represented Canada on multiple occasions and it’s clear the talent is there to succeed in a new situation.
Calvin Pickard has taken over the starting role for the Avalanche, and owns a .907 SV% and a 2.91 GAA on the year with a 13-27-2 record.
NHL Betting Trends:
- Washington ranks 2nd in goals per game at 3.2 on average
- Washington is on a four-game winning streak
- Washington is 18-11-6 on the road this year
- The Avs top scorer, Nathan MacKinnon, would rank 6th on Washington
- Colorado has the worst goal differential in the league at minus-106
- Colorado is 11-24-2 at home this year
Free Washington Capitals vs Colorado Avalanche NHL Hockey Prediction:
