The Canucks have made it back into the playoffs for the first time since 2015, and draw the defending Stanley Cup champions in the first round. However, a spectacular 5-2 win against the Blues in the Game 1 have change some perceptions of the Canucks.
The two teams met three times during the regular season, with Vancouver coming away a winning record of 2-0-1. But the Blues as defending champs are favored to win the series.
Certainly the matchup between star goaltenders, Jacob Markstrom and Jordon Binnington, makes this series a fan favorite and one that may end in an upset victory.
Vancouver Canucks
As we saw in Game 1, Jacob Markstrom proved to be a tough challenge for the Blues shooters.
The play of the team’s MVP will be absolutely crucial for the Canucks. He managed a GAA of 2.75 and a SV% of .918 behind a mediocre Canucks’ squad, and those numbers have only improved in the postseason.
At forward, the Canucks top line of J.T. Miller, Elias Pettersson, and Brock Boeser has the edge over the Blues’ top-line with Schwartz, Brayden Schenn, and Tarasenko, but as is the age old curse of Vancouver, they lack depth beyond the first line.
St. Louis Blues
After leading the Blues to a championship in a breathtaking rookie season, Binnington has enjoyed a solid sophomore year in the NHL. In 50 appearances, he put up a 2.56 goals-against-average and .912 save percentage.
However, the Canucks seem to have figured out Binnington in Game 1, so the Blues may play almost as equally solid backup, Jake Allen.
On the defensive side of things the Blues decidedly have the edge. Their defense at full strength is clearly more potent than the Canucks.
Although that said, the Blues’ shutdown pair with Colton Parayko and Marco Scandella are definitely going to have to step it up.

4* Free NHL Betting Pick: Lighting ML
The Canucks put on a good show in Game 1 and it has to be a boost to the confidence of the young team.
But the Blues have depth and staying power, they will most assuredly regroup and come back all the more determined to win.
That said, I don’t think Game 2 will be their revenge game. The Canucks, unlike a lot of other teams, enjoy playing in Edmonton and having the pressure off. They’ll be buoyed by their early success and play a wide open game, drawing out the Blues defense.
The Canucks are only slight underdogs in this game, but still it’s an opportunity to make some money against the league favorites. Take the Canucks and the under.
